Serial solutions for Homebrew hardware

I'm thinking about a hardware project and I'm at the stage of collecting as much info as I can.

 

The wall I'v hit is simple, There appears to be nothing out there about USB.

I don't even know if it's a viable idea yet, and if it is, wether USB would be right for it

but if anyone knows where I can find some USB info and/or programming examples it would be much appreciated
