Compute magazine disk image depository

Starting this thread to have a temporary place to collect Compute! magazine disk images.

I recently got off eBay a whole years worth of Compute's official disks for 1986. (below) (nothing on side B on any of these) (no errors while copying)

I also copied my Best of Compute's 1987 disk that came with the magazine. (both sides) (no errors while copying)

I scanned the disk labels as well and included them below.

If anybody has any disk or disk images that came from  official Compute disks (as apposed to a random program file/files that where typed or found on the Net, etc.) it would be great if you could post them here.

I figure this would be a great start to compiling a complete collection of Atari 8-bit Compute! magazine programs.

Unfortunately I don't know when Compute! started or stopped publishing disks for their magazine.

PS. On a side note I think I answered my question I posed in another thread about whether Compute ever published the source code to SpeedCalc on one of their disks.

Answer: NO.  :(

How different things were.  I miss the old computing magazines with type-ins and the fact that there were so many different computers to choose from, all with their own "personality".  Fun times indeed.  I've mentioned many times before, but it was Caves of Ice that my dad & I typed in on my 400 (fortunately it had a b-key installed) only to find out 16kB was not enough, so we had it upgraded to 48kB.

I miss it too.  I learned Basic solely by typing in magazine listings and figuring out what it was doing.  The M/L games in ANALOG were very good, with my favorite being Livewire, but typing in all those DATA statements was tiresome.  That is the main reason I bought a CX-85 keypad back then.

I saw the last post a few months ago, and it's been in the back of my head ever since.

Since then I looked through my old disks and found three that aren't already posted, but discovered I had a dead 1050 power supply.  Fast forward to last week, where I acquired a new power supply and was able to duplicate the following Compute! Disks to add to the collection.

COMPUTE! Disk January-March, 1987 - Vol 9, Nos 1-3

 COMPUTE! Disk April-June  1987 - Vol 9, Nos 4-6

COMPUTE! Disk July-September 1987 - Vol 9, Nos 7-9

Compute Disk Jan-Mar 1987 Vol 9 Nos 1-3.atr Compute Disk Apr-Jun 1987 Vol 9 Nos 4-6.atr Compute Disk Jul-Sep 1987 Vol 9 Nos 7-9.atr

I purchased another two Compute Atari disks. April, 1988 and October-December, 1987. I made two copies of the April, 1988 disk. it has a bad sector. I don't know what program is affected. Maybe somebody could fix it. @Atari_Ace ?  Anybody.

I took a look.  Sector 15 should be the last sector of the file MENU, but it links to sector 16 which is the next file AMAKER.APR.  If you make sector 15 contain a single byte (0x16), MENU then becomes a valid BASIC program.  The only other metadata issue appears to be that when a copy of INSIGHT.APR was deleted from sectors 23-34, the VTOC wasn't cleared, but that's a common issue on old disks.

So here's the "fixed" atr.

Not sure when the disks started but Compute! started in 1979 so abt 45 years ago damn I feel old

I'm sure that the Atari disk service didn't start until Jan-Mar, 1986.  There was an announcement in the December, 1985 issue.  I subscribed to their quarterly disks from the beginning until the disks ended in 1988.  I think they dropped Atari about the same time the disks ended.  Compute! didn't have the volume of quality articles and programs that (especially) Analog and also Antic had, but they still had some really nice programs and even books.  And of course, they had the late Bill Wilkinson and his Insight Atari columns.  Yes, I know what you mean about feeling old!

That's really interesting.  Have you found any other similar appearing disks from 1985?  Here's the announcement from the Editor's Notes page, December, 1985.  This was cut-and-paste, so I had to OCR the PDF.  (Or the original Issue 67 magazine scan is available at Archive.org.)

"Next month, by popular demand, COMPUTE! is kicking off the new year with an exciting new service: the COMPUTE! DISK. Now you can get all the programs for your computer without hours of typing. Each quarterly disk will contain every program published for your machine in the current and two previous issues, ready to load and run. The first disk, for the Commodore 64/128, has all the programs in the January 1986 issue—including the professional quality spreadsheet, SpeedCalc— and all the programs from the November and December 1985 is sues. As a special bonus, the January 1986 disk also includes SpeedScript 3.2, an updated version of COMPUTE!'s popular word processor. The Apple compute! DISK debuts in February 1986, followed by the Atari COMPUTE! disk in March and the IBM COMPUTE! disk in April. The Apple and Atari disks also will feature SpeedCalc and SpeedScript. Each COMPUTE! disk costs only $12.95 plus $1 shipping and han dling. Or you can order a year's subscription for $39.95 (a $12 savings). No. Not yet. Hopefully there are more that turn up.

Somehow, I became obsessed with testing the program "Lightning Renumber" that appeared in the October 1985 Issue of Compute (issue 65, page 103).

Lightning Renumber for Atari (atarimagazines.com)

Compute! Magazine Issue 065 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

The two print versions of this program have line breaks that divide each Basic statement into 2 or 3 lines of text.

I have made at least 3 valiant attempts to copy-paste the text lines into my Altirra Basic window from the above 2 sources.

After my 3 start-over attempts to resolve the character errors and line break errors, I was able to create an apparent correct Basic program.

Unfortunately, my RENUMBER.OBJ file or my attempts to execute the in-program memory poke routine always fail with an error code 136 (end-of file).

(Or Error 6 at line 1460)

I am thinking the two sources of text listings are missing one or more data elements?

I am unable to locate a digital file source for the Lightning Renumber program AND/OR the RENUMBER.OBJ file.

Does anyone have a saved copy of the Compute October 1985 disk version or the binary file version of this program to share?

THANK YOU !!!

PS. After my struggles with Lightning Renumber, I learned that TurboBasic XL has a built-in renumber command. YAY !!!
