Best Plain Old TI BASIC Games (w/MP3)

I can consistently load an mp3 from the MacBook with the volume AND the amp ramped up to maximum

EDIT: Actually it's not consistent as after a few good reads it's playing up again

But no joy making a tape with any of my tape decks (have tried lots of different settings from low volumes to high volumes and various EQ etc.)

Have decided life's too short to spend any more time on something I can live without for now at least

Thanks for all the advise though, much appreciated

I decided to try one last thing

I dug out my old iPod classic 5th gen and loaded some of the MP3's onto it

By putting the volume to max (and EQ to boosted treble) I could load all the mp3's I had on it (except 1) into the TI. The sound coming from the TV was very low (compared to an original tape in the TI tape deck) but it worked fine.

So I decided to try and make a tape from the output of the iPod. I had to turn the volume down so it was just above mute.

I then tried to load that tape into the TI and was successful once I turned down the volume on the TI tape drive (though an original tape won't load at that volume level, but not a big issue)

It's all a bit of a long winded way of doing things as the iPod isn't compatible with latest MacOS (had to use an old machine that was in the disposal pile along with the iPod) so have ordered a lightning to 3.5mm jack to try the same things with my Phone

Anyway, I can now make a working tape at least!

Thanks for all the advise, and @OLD CS1 you were perfectly correct when you said something like "more isn't always best" thanks

I used a headphone device called a BOOSTEROO to up the audio output to a level the TI needed.

In my continuing quest to find a reliable solution (phone has turned out to be very hit and miss) I decided to order a Boosteroo

However, my Amazon feed is now recommending Viagra and the like for me... 🤣

My Booster turned up. No use with the phone.

But combined with the USB/Tape device I got from @arcadeshopper all the files I've tried so far, via USB, have loaded thru to the end

However when loading all the larger files (by file size) after the "Data Ok" when I press enter I get an I/O Error 50?

Same thing with larger WAV files from WHTECH

This is with standard & extended basic, console only, console with peb (also tried call files(1)) & console with standalone 32kb memory expansion

With smaller files they load and run ok (even managed to save a file to tape and then reload it)

Any thoughts why I might be having problems with larger files (like Moonbeam Robot Run) please?

Many thanks

Having real problems with the quote system

I've been using mainly files from this thread, other than a couple of WAV from whtech

Hopefully I've managed to quote the original moonbeam post above though

Thanks

I'm not sure how that file was created. I haven't been able to load it. The game requires 32K, and seems to be a few lines too long for the normal SAVE CS1, method.

I think I've managed to solve the issue (just testing a few more files)

I was so zoned in on getting the output as loud a possible it didn't occur to me to turn the volume down!

I've managed to load & run Robot Run on a bare console running XB using the USB/Tape+Boosteroo via USB stick

Many thanks for looking at it @HOME AUTOMATION

Have also just loaded Astromania the same way, looking good

Thanks all

:)

I've now managed to load robot run and astromania with the PEB switched on

Had problems trying to save/load using a real floppy and gotek though (needs more testing I think)

But I could save/load using the TIPI CS1 mapping and when I copied the 2 files to the GoTek with FC I could load them from XB (though robot run needed call files(1))

A lot of headphone jacks on phones, MP3 players, etc, need something like this:

https://www.arcadeshopper.com/wp/store/#!/mini-amplifier-kits/p/219664449

(I had these made and sent them to @arcadeshopper a while back for this very reason).  They work really well at bringing up the volume to a sufficient level to what the console expects.

The schematics are here if anyone wants to build one:  https://archive.org/download/2771008-schematic  (The "C" schematic is the one I used.)

Nice of you to drop into this forum, Andy.  I just played your game under emulation using MESS and I took these three screenshots:

I got my one frog across the street and then across the river.  After that, my game ended.  Froggy is a simple little game.  I like that it isn't too fussy with jumping from log to log.  If you're close to the log, then you make the jump just fine.

Andy, please tell us about "EXTENDED SOFTWARE COMPANY."  What other games did you write and release?  How long did the company last?  When was it founded?  When did it end?  Were all the games written in BASIC?

Adam

Hey Adam, I'm very late in responding to this message - but to answer some of your questions, Froggy is the only game I wrote (back then).  I was 13 when I wrote it and I'm now 55    Extended Software was around for a few years that I know of, and that time frame was 1981;  most of the games they sold were written in BASIC or Extended BASIC as far as I recall

I've been looking for a way to get a TI Emulator up-and-running;  I tried looking for MESS but the links to the developer's website don't seem to mention MESS anywhere.  I've got Win994a Simulator installed, but I don't see any way to import the .WAV files from the original cassettes into the emulator.  Any tips for being able to get me up and running would be awesome;  I'm looking forward to checking out code that I wrote 42 years ago

Thanks for the tip!  So apparently the sound file I have (downloaded from this thread) is an MP3.  I tried converting it to a .WAV and loading it in with Classic99, but the emulator doesn't recognize the audio apparently - it seems to load, I can hear the audio in the background;  it gets to the end, and then after a minute or so, it errors out with an IO error.  I made sure to convert the MP3 to a mono .wav file with 16khz... no go :( Any suggestions?  (thanks for the help with this!)

I'd not recommended MP3 as a storage format for digital data in general. The reason is that MP3 is not lossless, and it may possibly introduce unhearable errors in the sound stream. This is somewhat like using JPG with a high compression. If possible, only create recordings with WAV format.

MAME can read WAV files as well, so you could try it if you like.
