Skippy B. Coyote
A pretty standard week in terms of the time logged around here, but the number of games played in my household this week was waaaaay higher than usual! After finishing DOOM Eternal last week I wasn't really sure what to play next, so I just tried out a ton of Neo Geo games I had been meaning to try and played a few Contra games as well. On the Neo Geo front I really liked Aero Fighters 2, Blazing Star, Crossed Swords, Magical Drop III, Nightmare in the Dark, and Twinkle Star Sprites. I think all of those will be going on my favorites list for repeat playing, and I actually ended up liking Nightmare in the Dark enough to play it until I beat it; which took no small amount of credits since that game gets really hard in later levels! As far as non-Neo Geo stuff goes, I broke out the trackball and fired up the Atari 2600 for the first time in probably 6 months or so since I was in the mood for some trackball gaming and managed to set a new personal best high score of 99,965 in game mode 4 of Missile Command TB in the process! After that I checked out the survival horror game Kholat on the Switch, which I picked up on sale on the eShop for about $7, and quickly found myself wishing I would have saved the $7. Maybe it's just me but this game feels about as exciting as watching paint dry and just barely scary enough to frighten a toddler, in spite of narrator Sean Bean's best attempts to give the story some weight. After soon giving up on that game I found myself playing Contra on the NES again, and somewhat miraculously managed to beat it with no continues, no savestates, and no cheats of any kind! That's a first for me, and I don't think I've felt that accomplished beating a game in many years! Riding high on my victory over Contra, I did a quick playthrough of my old favorite Operation C on the Game Boy then just spent the rest of the week playing Double Dragon II and Super C on the NES here and there. The real highlight of the week though was definitely beating Contra without using any continues! carlsson
Here are the 2021 Mid-Year Stats, following the previous format. You can find the 2020 stats here. So far this year, we have played: 1290 games (compared to 588 games in 2020, 1007 games in 2019 and 1078 games in 2018) 53 systems (compared to 41 systems in 2020, 51 systems in 2019 and 69 systems in 2018) 117,261 minutes (compared to 77,535 minutes in 2020, 105,034 minutes in 2019 and 115,238 minutes in 2018) After a few years on the decline, it seems that 2021 is going strong. Perhaps it is an effect of Covid-19, or simply that retro gaming became more popular again? On average, each game has been played 91 minutes, compared to previous years (132 min in 2020, 104 min in 2019, 107 min in 2018). The tracker contains 10072 entries so 1/8 (12.8%) of all games have been played this year The most played game still is Solar Fox, though the two Suikoden games are new entries in the top. Kaboom! hangs onto 4th place as well as it remains the second most played pre-NES game. The two biggest drops are Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade) from #12 to #100 and Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis) from #13 to #78. +jgkspsx
I am going to take credit for boosting the Game Gear and for bringing down the average time per game I… don’t think I own Solar Fox. I’d better rectify that!

TheGameCollector
I played last week but didn't have time to post times on Tuesday so we can just count it for this week where I haven't spent as much time gaming yet. Sonic the Hedgehog for Genesis - 43 minutes Duck Hunt for NES - 47 minutes Faxanadu for NES - 130 minutes Ice Hockey for NES - 12 minutes Kirby's Adventure for NES - 103 minutes RC Pro-Am for NES - 24 minutes Renegade for NES - 13 minutes Final Fantasy V for SNES - 68 minutes Sonic the Hedgehog I beat again with all emeralds to get a better video and audio quality take. This time I managed to hit Dr. Robotnik 8 times in Labyrinth Zone before he got away. It's hard to do. Duck Hunt I played each of the three modes until I got a Game Over. Faxanadu I beat from start to finish in one sitting, getting all the equipment items. Ice Hockey I played USA vs Sweden with default settings and won by many points. Kirby's Adventure I played through the main mode in one sitting, getting all the secrets. I even did the Mike trick at the end of the battle with Paint Roller but didn't keep the extra Mike uses for that long. RC Pro-Am, I made it to level 22 but failed. Renegade I beat difficulty setting 1. Final Fantasy V - just more job level grinding.

Steven Pendleton
I don't really think I will play anything in the next few minutes before it becomes tomorrow/Monday, so I may as well post now. Not much here this time; go check the modern tracker to see why. Dreamcast Sonic Adventure International - 153 Finally done with Sonic Adventure. I still don't really care for half of the characters, so maybe I won't play as them next time I replay the game. Sonic Adventure 2 - 11 Still can't really bring myself to play this game, as I only enjoy 1/3 of it (Sonic/Shadow stages). The rest of the characters could be removed for all I care and then I'd actually want to play it! Genesis/MD Sonic 3 & Knuckles - 62 (estimate) Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - 13 Basically just messing around with debug mode and glitches in both games. I love debug mode and glitches! You probably do too... right? Thunder Force III - 31 Yes, my beloved Thunder Force is back. I didn't feel like setting up my Saturn, so I used the Mega Sg for the first time in a while and got an easy no miss. I forgot to make a record of my score, though.

Kurt_Woloch
Here are my times for this past week (July 5th through 11th, 2021) on classic systems: Apple II: Crisis Mountain - 141 min. in 6 sessions Arade: Burger TIme - 5 min. Jr. Pac-Man - 5 min. Pooyan - 11 min. Channel F: Pac-Man - 28 min. in 2 sesions TI-99/4A: Parsec - 5 min. This week I played quite an assortment of games which is due to the fact that my old PC is failing fast, so I'm now wrapping things up before it falls apart completely. I've consolidated all the versions of MAME and MESS I have on it, givng the software and ROM folders to the newest version, after which I tested various games if they run on this new configuration. Tha Apple IIe emulation would need a newer romset, as would, as I found out, Super Qix. The other games I've tried so far work. I replayed Crisis Mountain for quite a long time, but the last game took over 20 minutes. I also replayed Burger Time and Pooyan, mostly to see if they work OK with the new configuration. In Channel F's Pac-Man and in Jr. Pac-Man I didn't get any farther than usual. Edited July 11, 2021 by Kurt_Woloch PC (Windows) belongs to the modern tracker.

+thegoldenband
My time for the week: Genesis: Eliminate Down - 865 min. Focused all my gaming energies on beating Hard mode, which I did -- and was able to follow up immediately with a 1CC on Hard with the minimum number of starting credits. Thoughts on the game, plus two others I've beaten recently, here.
+jgkspsx
@Kurt_Woloch I may be alone on this, but arcade Pooyan is just one of those perfect games for me. I love everything about it. Not a great week for gaming. I played a lot of stuff in sub-five minute bursts, but here are the substantial ones: Game Gear: Ichidant-R - 15 minutes. Still a lot of fun, but some of the games are a lot more frustrating than Tant-R. True Lies - 20 minutes. Of the very many games starring Ahnald on the Game Gear, this is likely the best. Not as good as its Genesis big brother, surely the cream of the crop of licensed Acclaim games, but a very solid top down shooter. One of the few. Last Action Hero - 15 minutes. 15 minutes of trying to figure out how to just get past the first area of the first level. The low level grunts have a gun, and grenades they roll at you, and their punches have more reach than yours. And it’s super finicky about where you need to stand. And the music is atrocious and a super short loop. This is really bad. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie - 15 minutes. Not a bad little fighting game, really. Mickey’s Ultimate Challenge - 15 minutes. This is a minigame compilation. Not exactly in the same company as Sega’s great platformers, but not bad. Lynx: Checkered Flag - 60 minutes. More time grinding away seconds from my track time. Genesis: Trampoline Terror - 20 minutes. Oddly fun game. Thunder Force III - 60 minutes. What a rush! Turbografx 16/PC Engine: Super Star Soldier - 75 minutes. What a rush!!! Dragon Spirit - 20 minutes. This was my favorite shmup as a kid. I still really like it. One of these days I am going to pick up Dragon Saber. Circus Lido - 25 minutes. I really wish I could finish 10 levels. Don Doko Don - 15 minutes. This is a really awesome bobbler. Tiger Sega Pocket Arcade: Sonic 3 - 15 minutes. A very weird implementation of Sonic where you have to hit a button to pick up rings. Still trying to figure this one out.

BurritoBeans
Had to do some repairs on one of my PC-98s, a UV11, so I broke out the only 3.5" disk games I owned and remembered to log my times down! PC-9801 Dragon Quest - 119 minutes Popful Mail - 71 minutes The Return of Ishtar - 82 minutes Dragon Quest is an odd one, apparently some say it's a bootleg MSX conversion? I'm unsure of exactly where it's from but it's cool to see no matter what. It's playable, the YM2203 sound great, and I'm glad I have it. Popful Mail usually hates hard drives and to my surprise it has no issues with my new SCSI2SD setup. It's not the "best" version of the game, I think that goes to the Sega CD, but I really do quite enjoy the PC-98 version. I didn't get very far, just Stage 2, so thankfully my saves to hard drive work now! Ishtar freaked me out for a second. I've yet to see a 15KHz title until this now and thankfully my AccuSync worked after a minute of freaking out. It's strange to see a co-op title of all things but it does work surprisingly well, or I guess as well as one person simulating two players can make it work. I'm afraid my other two titles need more RAM, 640K just wasn't enough, so maybe I'll try to get a 1MB C-bus card...

Skippy B. Coyote
A much smaller list of games from my household this week, something for which our ever appreciated and dutiful statistician Carlsson will no doubt be grateful for My overall play time was much the same as usual this week, except I stayed focused on just a handful of games this time around. I spent most of the week playing through DOOM Eternal on the Switch again (this time on Ultra Violence difficulty) but took a little time to test out a brand new NES Classic Edition controller I picked up on eBay with Contra and Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES on the Nintendo Switch Online service. I thought the NES Classic Edition controller would be awesome for playing NES games on my Switch with the 8BitDo G-Bros adapter, but as it turned out the d-pad on the NES Classic controller is significantly more shallow than the one on an original NES controller and I kept getting false inputs with it so back in the box and up on eBay it went for slightly less than I paid for it. Ya win some ya lose some I suppose, and this time I lost. The only other game I played this past week was Samurai Shodown II on the Neo Geo MVSX machine. I've always just played as Galford in all the Samurai Shodown games but this week I decided to branch out a bit and try some new characters, so I spent a lot of time trying out different characters and decided I liked Ukyo and Jubei a lot; and I ended up playing through and beating the game with both of them. I've still got a soft spot for Galford and his faithful pooch Poppy, but Ukyo might be my new favorite character to play! There's not many fighting games I feel like I'll never tire of playing, but Samurai Shodown II is definitely one of them; right up there with the original Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II: Champion Edition Ineligible DOOM Eternal (Nintendo Switch) - 880 minutes NES Contra - 38 minutes Super Mario Bros. 3 - 123 minutes Neo Geo AES/MVS Samurai Shodown II - 230 minutes Total Video Game Play Time This Week 1,271 minutes (21 hours 11 minutes) [391 minutes eligible] Individual System Play Times This Week Nintendo Switch: 880 minutes Neo Geo AES/MVS: 230 minutes NES: 161 minutes Edited July 13, 2021 by Skippy B. TheGameCollector
I only have one more entry to add to my above list: Kirby's Adventure for NES - 103 minutes. I completed the Extra Game (hard mode). I went ahead and got all the secret switches even though you don't have to in this mode to change your file description into "perfect."

At the same time, the Genesis game becomes member #451 in the 1000 Minute Club with a total of 1289 minutes. Most played pre-NES game is not an 2600 game, not even an Atari game but Crisis Mountain for the Apple II, followed by eight various Atari based games and Frogger on the arcade. Systems wise the Genesis remains the most played system for the third week in a row, from a combined effort of 6 games of which Eliminate Down contributes 79% of that figure. 2
