+cmadruga
Interested in comparing observations and insights, particularly with seasoned collectors out there. Found this web site called PriceCharting the other day. I got interested in their methodology for scrapping data from eBay and assessing prices for different videogame systems. Out of curiosity, I looked at the Intellivision section. There I found the chart below: Not surprisingly, average prices have gone up over the past decade. The spike in 2020 (about 33% increase vs 2018/2019) was particularly interesting. I suppose it had to do with the pandemic. I looked at charts from other systems, and surely several others showed that same bump in their charts. I was also curious about the previous hike (and volatility) between 2012 and 2016, followed by stability and even a slight decline after that. Interestingly, the 2600 shows a similar growth pattern over that period. Not sure what could have driven that - looks like retro gaming fever? Anyway, going back to the Inty. I looked at all the individual items they tracked. The list is far from complete, but still has many things. Just for fun, I pasted their table on a spreadsheet. I then added the total cost... WOW $9K US dollars for a CIB collection and $18K+ for a "new" (sealed) one. And that's not counting the Keyboard Component and all the homebrews. So I was curious about what other collectors think of: - some of the values shown on the table below (I sorted by descending order of CIB prices) - what is the real cost of an Intellivision collection, and how high can it go. I don't consider myself a collector, but I'm interested in the "economics" associated with the discussion ? $4,406.60 $8,977.41 $18,408.14 Title Loose Price CIB Price New Price Spiker! colormesticky
A couple of the expensive ones don't seem expensive enough. I'm definitely going the loose cart route when I get to that point.
+cmart604
From my experience, which admittedly might be a bit of an outlier cost wise, it costs approximately eleventy billion dollars to properly assemble an Inty collection. YMMV. Lol. Having said that I need to dig into these figures a bit more... 2
+JasonlikesINTV
Those CIB prices aren't actually to far off, IMO. Pricecharting is decent for Nintendo, but still struggling with more retro systems. The worst was Congo Bongo @ $178. Everyone knows it's over $1500 ?
+JasonlikesINTV
Back to the price of a complete collection, it varies wildly with condition and completeness. I did some math a few years ago and concluded this: $1500-2000: 125 loose $4000-5000: 125 CIB $5000-7000: 125 CIB nicer boxes Obviously, you could easily exceed $10k if you want mint boxes, sealed, specific versions, etc. Sky's the limit, but it's doable on the cheap if your aren't picky. Honestly, with creative trading, some reselling, and patience you could probably build a budget set for free.
+cmadruga
Thanks for all the responses! How do you guys see this apparent spike in prices shown during 2020 at the charts I posted? Have you been seeing that in practice? If that spike is real, that would probably make the figures calculated by @JasonlikesINTV in the past even higher today. Do you think that is likely to subside, or has collecting for Intellivision really become permanently more expensive? It will be interesting to look at that chart after the Amico is launched. Could there be a halo effect increasing prices further, as more nostalgic folks will "remember" the Intellivision. +littaum
Based on my experience selling off my Intellivision collection earlier this year, any prices $20 and over (particularly for CIB, which are particularly desirable) are somewhat realistic. Anything under $20 can likely be had for $1-$2 each by being patient and purchasing off people who are less patient than you are. I would say the price spike has been real, driven obviously in part by the pandemic and people looking for things to do and to spend money on. I think there has definitely been a stimulus cheque spending power boost. I'm guessing it will subside in the next 12 months. Having said that I think the halo effect from the Amico has already begun as we've seen new collectors joining AA and FB Inty and Amico groups and subsequently discovering or rediscovering the Inty. Maybe I should sell it all and get my eleventy billion back.

+cmadruga
I can't believe whoever bought it will just sit on it. It's just too much cash tied in one asset. You gotta pay insurance for something of this value, right? Plus you also incur opportunity costs...

Congo Bongo: $178 to $1,584 LF2: $510 to $1,400 Maybe it's just real high end stuff, as games like Diner and Triple Challenge are close.
