Welcome to the eighth round of the 14th 5200 HSC season!  Gorf and River Raid tied in the poll, but Gorf won the resulting coin toss. Play using the default setting.  Emulation is fine, as are custom controls. Pics preferred, but not required except for HSC wins and records.

The high score was set by zylon with 46,500 points.  Bust it if you can for a bonus point!

The regular game “features” some rather jittery analog controls.  Some like them, others don’t.  As such, please feel free to use kenfused’s hack instead if you prefer more standard controls.  Just let us all know which version you used.

The standard ROM can be found here:

From Wikipedia:

Gorf is an arcade game released in 1981 by Midway Mfg., whose name was advertised as an acronym for "Galactic Orbiting Robot Force".

Gorf was originally intended to be a tie-in with Star Trek: The Motion Picture but after reading the film's script, the game designers realized that the concept would not work as a video game; however, the player's ship still resembles the Starship Enterprise. The underlying hardware platform for Gorf allowed arcade operators to easily swap the pattern, CPU and RAM boards with other similar games such as Wizard of Wor, since only the game logic and ROM boards are specific to each game. The name of the game is also Frog spelled backwards; "Frog" was the nickname of designer Jamie Fenton during college.

Interestingly, however annoying the jittery controls are to get used to, it sure looks like mastering them leads to higher scores!

The poll for the next round may have closed early.

It does look that way.  My apologies, but y’know, anyone who wanted to certainly could have cast a vote in the comments.  As is, Wizard of Wor is up next.
