Games that aggravate you (but you can't stop playing)...

Recommended Posts

A few classic games just seem unfair or way to hard, yet for some

reason in spite of pissing me off they keep making me come back

for more punishment.

Off hand, I would put in this category:

Spelunker (Atari 8-bit)

R-Type (Arcade or PS1)

Raiden II (Arcade)

Jumpman Jr. (Atari 8-bit)

Alternate Reality: The City (Atari 8-bit)

Sky Soldiers (Arcade)

What's on your list?

Cannon Fodder (Jag). I used to play that game a LOT... I even had a hint book that told me how to get through each level, but I have still never gotten past level 8 (out of 32). Quite possibly the hardest and most frustrating game I've ever played. I absolutely hated when my little soldiers got to such a nice high rank and then got slaughtered by a stray bullet that I couldn't see, or an exploding roof. :x

The one game under this category that comes to mind is probably Cannonball Blitz for the Apple II.. It was a Donkey Kong Clone in which it was very easy to die, but it took like 2 minutes for you to start your next life!

(ok so I'm exaggerating.. but it sure felt like it) :P

All the good ones? :)

Seriously though, what list of obscene games would be complete without Ninja Gaiden?

True, many good games have that addictive feel, but the ones with

a more normal difficulty ramp don't give me that feeling that I'm

suffering while I still want to play it...

For example, Tetris or Civilization are also very addictive, but they

are pretty easy on the player in the begining so the frustration

doesn't build in the same way.

Games without continue (Jumpman Jr.) or where continuing costs

real money (arcade shooters) or where it's hopeless to continue

after you've lost a life (R-TYPE) form most of this "painful but fun"

category for me.

I don't know how many times I've played through the first few levels

of R-TYPE, and I still can't finish the thing...

I actually like R-Type because it's NOT that bad about lost lives.

Sure you aren't fully equipped, but compare it to that OTHER long-running shooter series.

I loathe Gradius with a passion, because you literally start too weak to survive. Should you die, there are places that become physically impossible to get through. You literally can't move fast enough.

A notable example being a few levels in on Gradius 3, where you're dropped into a tunnel that scrolls rapidly. Die, respawn in the tunnel, and the tunnel moves up faster than you can move down, and you will be crushed to death in the top-left corner untill you run out of lives.

By comparision, R-Type becomes insanely hard, but never impossible.
