calamari
Hi, I've done a bit of soldering in the past (built a SIO2PC cable for one example). However, that was built from new parts. What I am trying to do now is reuse an Atari 5200 cart board (I'm modding it for a ZIF socket instead of a ROM). I have taken the chip out (clipped it off, poor Pengo ) but now I am trying to put a ZIF socket where the chip used to be. The problem is that even though the ROM is out, the solder filled the holes back in, so I can't just slip it in. How can I get this socket in, short of buying a solder sucker / solder wick? I was kinda hoping to get it done tonight, if possible, and all the stores are closed. Thanks, Jeff
+Mitch
You can try using toothpicks. Heat up the solder and stuff the toothpick in. They don't work the greatest but they might be OK. Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
AlanD
Lay out a piece of newspaper on the table. Heat up the solder then rap the board on the table before it hardens again. It'll clear the holes that way. Better method is to go ahead and buy the $5 solder sucker from Radio Shack tho. Cheap and you'll get more use out of it down the line. Also if you want to use any 32K eproms you'll need to add a chip to the board and cut a few traces. I think instructions are at Jay Tilton's page in the Deathskull Labs section. +Mitch
I just started working on this mod myself and I was wondering, what I am supposed to do with the capacitor in C1? The instructions don't mention it. Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
calamari
Leave the capacitor in C1 (next to the 28-pin socket), take out the capacitor in C2 (24-pin socket), if any. calamari
+Mitch
Well, I finished it up tonight. It works great! I decided to try out Asteroids first since I've never played the 5200 version before. Ack, what a poor version. It looks worse than the 2600 one and the controls are bad! Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
