Some people (not me) definitely got CIB KLAX in 2021 so that should be on the list even if only a few people have actually played it.  <-- not taking a shot.  I will happily support it when it's released in greater numbers.

Klax got a review in 2020. How many people in this forum have played Klax? I venture none to maybe one.

Klax is actually my Wifes favorite video game that she ever played with me. I still have it for the Sega Genesis.

She made it through all 99 levels.

I would love to get a copy or two of that if it ever became available to the Intellivision.

Shouldn't the case be that every game not previously part of a GOTY poll, qualifies for the next?

I don't see Klax in the 2019 or 2020 polls, of which the later was interrupted and restarted to add Maria:

https://atariage.com/forums/topic/315866-goty-2020-restarted-resend-your-vote/

https://atariage.com/forums/topic/300285-intellivision-goty-2019/

Basically I understand that it is a mess to keep track of which Intellivision games were released when, and every year there is a several week long discussion about which games even exist or not. Yet there are several sites and lists claiming to keep track of this information, but still somehow seem to miss it.

My suggestion would be to go through a list of all games released since 2019 until today, then cross reference with the GOTY from 2019 and 2020 to remove titles that already were part of a poll, and in case there are games that were missed out in previous polls, add those with this one as a catch-up.

Another way to approach the subject is that if anyone releases an Intellivision game past US Thanksgiving, it will never be able to become GOTY because it is too late in that year for customers to receive it, and too early for being part of the subsequent GOTY. That might be all right, but something for publishers to consider, that a game released late in the year never will be voted the best game of the year regardless of how playable it is.

Did KLAX ever officially become available to buy in 2021? That should be the criteria. Pre-release review copies shouldn’t factor in.

And I think a game has to ship to buyers by December 31. When it arrives shouldn’t be a problem if the window for voting is reasonable, as it has been in the past. (It takes us longer to agree on the nominees than  it does for the shipping companies to deliver!)

I would say if the bulk or the game was in peoples hands by Dec 31.

But how many is the question?   Releasing games at years end gets tricky in regards to GOTY.

Also, im rethinking Frankensteins Monster in the physical category only, does 20 copies really qualify as a release?  Hardly enough games to be in.

Klax, no one hardly has a copy, digital or physical.   It should not be in 2021.

I'm cool helping push this baby through the finish line - at least this one time.

But I have no idea how to create the survey. Does one need admin permission?

... and sure we can add a few categories as an experiment, why not? Life is short.

How about:

Best box art

Best sound/music

Best overlays

Best manual

Best graphics

Best port

And here is the updated list with no Frankenstein under physical.

What else needs to be updated?

Physical releases

Do digital only manuals count?  Some of the digital only games do have manuals.

That can be resolved easily by stating that GOTY nominees need to be released by MM/DD, and any game released past that date will carry over to the GOTY for the subsequent year. I believe that is how the Academy Awards (Oscars) and other award shows work. You can never get a perfect coverage of January 1 - December 31 unless you delay voting until March the subsequent year.

March the next year sounds perfect.

Everyone loves the year end Christmas presents, even when you buy them for yourself.

I checked the Atari Homebrew Awards. They count games from January 1 - December 31, and start the poll around January 15-23 the subsequent year, with an award show in the beginning of February. I don't know how that works for CIB releases, if one gets released mid December it probably is nearly impossible for the voting audience to have any knowledge about it until mid January. Perhaps many games are published in WIP stages before getting CIB treatment so people at least have gotten to see videos of what is coming instead of striking the market with surprise.

Fair question.

Maybe we could keep it simple for now and only consider physical releases?

So some of the categories would be renamed to:

Best Box Art (physical release)

Best Overlays (physical release)

Best Manual (physical release)

Maybe that could be the aspiration next year.

For now there have been accommodations on a couple of games for what is a "2021 release". I'd say let's go with what we have already.

I like the idea of an "award presentation" of some sort. Maybe @Papa Pete would be interested in doing something once the vote is over?

If he’s up for it I think that would be a great idea, he could show a bit of gameplay footage, or packaging etc, whatever is appropriate for the category.
