Naming of assembler files

Recommended Posts

I'm looking over the code for Basic XL and XE and I'm curious about the file naming... most files are BANK or MAIN, but looking inside these appear to be various modules. I compared this to other sources, like Action!, where this naming is not followed and the files have more obvious names.

Is there anything special about these names? Was it simply that SMS/OSS picked this style and everyone else followed it?

Bank/Main I'd think would refer to targeted location on the cartridge.

OSS carts of 16K have 4 x 4K banks.  3 of them are switchable (BANK) and have to share the address space $A000-$AFFF.

MAIN is fixed and lives at $B000-$BFFF.  Routines mostly used or needed to run quickly would usually appear here.
