Both good games as are all the picks with Repton being the unknown one!

I'm sure I've played this (and I'm sure I like the original more), but why does this one get spit on so much?

My memory is that it's just more of the same really, other than it scrolls in a different direction.  Is it really 4.4 bad?

I almost voted for it but ultimately didn't simply because we had already played Blue Max so it felt like playing a game we'd already played.  I'll play it anyway just to see but I'm curious what the HSC community thinks of it.

Heh, I didn't even spot that Blue Max 2001 was mentioned among the choices but not possible to vote for!

According to the all-time list, Robix was played in season 5, which would be roughly 14 years ago (2008) unless it has been played again more recently but not updated. I joined the HSC in January 2017 and haven't played it yet, so at least 6 years ago if it was replayed more recently. Of course in a broader Atari scale, 14 years is just about only a few years ago.

It would seem that people across the world are quite consistent:

Blue Max
Atarimania A8: 7.8/10
Lemon C64: 8.2/10
Old (1983-85) magazines: 8.17/10

Blue Max 2001
Atarimania A8: 4.4/10
Lemon C64: 4.6/10

Old magazines: 4.0/10
Mobygames critics: 2.5/10

Words like "bleurgh", "anemic", "worst sequel ever", "impossible controls" and "too difficult" are frequently mentioned about BM 2001. Many say that just as good as the original game was, equally unplayable is this one. Perhaps we should have it as a bonus game anyway, just to give it a fair judgement?

again they don't know what they're on about, it plays well but it's been a long time. Probably at least a 7/10 game, will have it in a future poll "games new to the HSC along with Repton if it doesn't make the cut. Probably hammered it as it's not as good as the original but hey that is a tall ask :-o

What was the horizontal scroller we played a few years ago, where the bosses are big insects? That was good

Edit: I was thinking of Robix

A lot of people who misrate it then. Atarimania has 55 votes but no detailed statistics. Lemon 64 has 44 votes divided as such:

10/10 - 0 votes
9/10 - 0 votes
8/10 - 2 votes
7/10 - 4 votes
6/10 - 9 votes
5/10 - 9 votes
4/10 - 8 votes
3/10 - 7 votes
2/10 - 1 vote
1/10 - 4 votes

So about 13% of the C64 users would agree with your rating, and probably the same goes for the A8 users. Perhaps Blue Max 2001 is an acquired taste simply?

I think like the original it's a case of changing the control over to dive up on the stick and down is pull back to ascend, then you can bomb when diving so a quick play would not be fun the other way around... just a guess not played it for years and years. Plus it's a game with some long term play like the original I think it still has the rating etc so it's designed to be challenging and after all it was a follow up to BM so it should be harder perhaps!

I realized we played Vanguard in 2018, but the all-time list didn't reflect this (until I took my moderation privileges and updated this). Thus in terms of rotating as many games as possible, it seems fine to only play Dropzone (which currently is in the lead).
