DIN13 RGB mapped pinout for VBXE (stock 800XL) for CoolNovelties 1088XEL RGB scart cable

Here I though I'd share the fully mapped pinout for a DIN13 PCB mounted connector when using a Cool Novelties 1088XEL RGB scart for a VBXE stock 800XL install.

I had a look around and AFAIK there doesn't exist this info all in one place.

So this DIN13 PCB mounted connector:

So this is the pinout for using VBXE with this particular DIN13 to SCART cable: https://coolnovelties.co.uk/coolnovelties/atari-800-1200-65xe-130xe/306-1088xel-atari-8-bit-clone-rgb-scart-video-cable-0705693506388.html

EDIT:

image.png.288ffd463cb4ee1c954ace8e045cb87b.png

Basically I recently undertook an upgrade of a PAL 800XL with a VBXE installation using a DIN13 PCB connector.

So I purchased one and set about the removal of the RF modulator and the drilling/prep work needed.

I followed FJC's excellent video here where was very helpful:

I then watched FJC's video on the upgrade install itself. I made all the dupont connectors and wiring in preparation:

However it's understandbly hard to see from the above video where the VBXE's J4 connector wires are going to the RGB connector on the underside side of the PCB given they are so tightly packed in. Also I wasn't clear which of the DIN13 pins were Hsync and audio.

So I contacted FJC directly who kindly pointed me to the following schematic from Mytek which provides the the RGB pinout for this cable, where I then worked out how it mapped to the RGB's pins from the underside of the PCB.

So below I've crossed referenced Lotharek's VBXE (XL) installation doc with Mytek's DIN13 pinout and FJC's video and combined it all into one annotated image as a quick reference guide. (Lotharek's guide only covers DB9 and Scart pinouts btw)

I've also indicated the Hsync and audio location hookup points.

Thanks to FJC, Mytek and Lotharek for their content. :)

Hope it helps? :)

Why would you want to use a DIN13 if the desired output was SCART?

Mine uses a DE15 (aka VGA) - the sole reason there being that I already had a cable that had the socket at the other end to go straight into a 1084S.

I understand that you'd probably not want a SCART at the Atari end since it's so huge but wouldn't there be easier options?

It rather looks the part (since it's a round DIN connector, and the Atari ST used the same DIN13), and there's a readily available, commercially sold DIN13 to SCART cable with the correct pinout at the link Beeblebrox posted above. There's also provision for stereo audio on the DIN13 (catered for by the cable), removing the need for separate RCA jacks for sound.

Surprisingly enough, several installers do fit full-sized SCART connectors to the back of the machine, and - unsurprisingly - it does look awful. :)

@Rybags This is a tried and tested mod from FJC whose done this mod loads of times :)

The CoolNovelties DIN13 to SCART cable already exists and is cheap.

DIN13 is a small footprint PCB mounted connector, fits on the XL's board nicely in place of the RF modulator. Only a relatively small hole is needed for the RGB plug which is acheived by enlarging the old RF modulator hole in the casing.

So it's minimal from the outside. I could mount a VGA connector of course.

Could you post an image of your VGA connector on the back of your machine?

Anyways DIN13 works for me on many levels :)

EDIT: and as FJC just posted the DIN13 has audio integrated. Nice and compact plug. :)

I guess I was looking from local perspective.  SCART was never common here.

I'd love to see CoolNovelties sell a DIN13->DB9/dual RCA as well, plus other variations (VGA for example, since some DB15 inputs can sync down to 15KHz), since I lothe building cables, but I guess it depends on what's going to sell.

Thanks for this, exactly what I need. I have a DIN13 and the CoolNovelties cable on hand and need to summon the courage to drill my board!

Fantastic, glad the timing worked for ya. :) Was hoping it would help others.

Are you just installing the VBXE in your 800XL (assuming it is a stock 800XL btw?) or do you/will you have U1MB in there as well?

FYI for anyone else I got my DIN13 PCB socket from here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293211239741

I am definitely glad I had a dremel to hand for the grinding down of the PCB copper. As FJC says in his vid make sure you drill the holes first before you then take the copper off with the latter.

Here is my wiring BTW:

EDIT: Note: the extra blue wire going through the hole is just the standard Chroma hook up to pin 5 of the stock DIN5 jack BTW - just in case it confuses.

image.png.cefc5eae5bc4d7aeab169cc77f84fcd1.png

Also the brown wire coming through the old RF modulator mount slot is the connecton between the VBXE J1 connector (pin 8 ) and the LS138 IC, (pin 9).

image.png.96b4b6a1f05cdcf1a5618b2932518bf2.png

......I just went under the board instead of over to get to the IC.

If you install U1MB then this wire goes to the VB pin (P4 header) on the U1MB instead of the LS138:

I’ve got U1Mb in there too, it’s just missing PokeyMax but guess I’ll have to wait.

At the moment I have a ribbon coming out of the PBI aperture in the case carrying the VBXE video. I need to carve out some time to install the DIN 13.

It's been 5 years since I contacted CoolNovelties about customization of their ST DIN-13 to SCART cable offering for stereo and XEL compatibility. At the time they were very responsive. So I marked up a schematic for their reference, and they responded by sending me out a sample cable for free (I did offer to pay for it at the time). Anyway if history tells us anything, perhaps starting up a dialog and emailing a sketch of what you have in mind would get some positive results. Unfortunately I forget the person's name and email address I corresponded with, but using the Contact Form at their website would be a good place to start.

I did much the same as you, working up a sketch of a cable with a switch that would send color and monochrome ST modes out through a SCART connector that I could use with my OSSC without swapping cables if I wanted to switch from color to monochrome. They seemed very interested at first, but then I never heard anything back and it's never been offered for sale, so I guess they just got busy, or the weren't really all that interested after all and were just being polite.

I did this once, and will only do it once.  After the fact, I realized "hey stupid - you only needed 4 or 5 of those connections :(

Was made to plug into the back of my 1084-S (also modded with an s-video jack).  Another mistake I made, was using the right angle DIN.  Needs to be a straight through for proper clearance.

Looks like the case is prepared for SCART.  IIRC, European spec 1084S's all come with a SCART connector.  It might be worth looking into the possibility to add SCART.  Either on the PCB or in the schematics.

Sincerely

Mathy
