Amazon has a free sample of the book:

Racing the Beam: The Atari Video Computer System (Platform Studies)

The free sample is a really interesting study of the early early days of video gaming starting in labs (think o'scope display), moving in to bars and pizza joints and finally in to the living rooms, with a side of the origins of different types of well established game types of today (adventure, FPS, etc).

I can remember my dad coming home from a work trip and getting a Fairchild system because he had played Pong on a cabinet in the airport. My siblings and I played tennis til our hands were raw.  I guess I should look for that in their attic.  I think the only cartridge he got was blackjack.
