Is Crate Challenge like the Stack game or Klax,  homebrews for the 2600?

It’s inspired by the great Alex Herbert’s Man Goes Down

which was in turn based on Fall Down for the TI-84:

Which may have been based on something else? My favorites in the genre are Downfall for the Jaguar and Tower & Shaft for the GBA.

Atari 8-bit:
Eliminator - 8 min.
Meteor Storm - 7 min.
Repton - 5 min.
Rockball - 16 min.
Sky Blazer - 7 min.

This HSC round begun with 2 games and has now grown to 5, extended by an extra week in order for people to play them all. Rockball was very generous with an extra life every 5000 pts so I patched it in order to not give any extra lives at all.

Here are my times for this past week (June 19th through 25th) on classic systems...

Gameboy Color:

Grimace's birthday - 7 min.

MSX:

Commando - 10 min.

TI-99/4A:

Burger Time - 10 min.

This week, I played Grimace's birthday which was actually put out by McDonalds recently, but still is a Gameboy Color game playable on that system if you manage to put it on there (there is no physical release). It's a jump'n'run game with a few twists in which you have to collect purple milkshakes as Grimace.

Then I replayed "Commando" and "Burger Time" but only for one game each. In Burger Time, I still managed to clear all 6 levels ("patterns") on the first go. While the first pattern is comparable in complexity to the arcade version, the subsequent ones become much simpler and not so big a challenge. Somehow I got that version which also displays a coffee cup instead of the endless ice cream cone sometimes, and fixes some sound issues, but the enemies actually seem to be less smart than in the arcade. "Commando" was the usual slow affair on the MSX, but I still didn't manage to finish the first level.

Atari 2600

Kaboom! - 53 minutes

Sheep It Up! - 21 minutes

Solar Fox - 152 minutes

Stay Frosty 2 - 47 minutes

I scored 6,363,200 on Solar Fox.  I played Racks 1-255 and 1-48.  I didn't get interrupted this time, but I just ran out of steam or got cocky.  When I lost it happened really fast.  I lost 4 or 5 lives in a short amount of time.

Just one game again...

SNES

TMNT Turtles in Time - 300 min  (A discord server I'm part of has a monthly challenge where they will donate $10 for every streamer that beats a retro game picked for that month.  This month was Turtles in Time.  I tried on the default difficulty setting, but failed.  So then I fiddled with the settings and beat it on easy.  :)  But hey, a win is a win.)

I played 7800 games again

Atari 7800:

Donkey Kong Jr.-15 min

Galaga- 5min

Wizard’s Dungeon- 35 min

Dragon’s Havoc- 60min

Got to the last boss of Dragon’s Havoc this week but couldn’t beat it. Dragon’s Havoc is dang hard. Good thing it has unlimited continues. Overall really enjoyed the game and it is impressive that it is only a 48k cartridge. Level 7-2 has cheap difficulty though in the first part of the level since you pretty much cannot beat it coming in without having done it before because of the hidden breakable blocks in the walls. If you don’t know where they are and memorize the sequence you are screwed.

Week of 6/19/23 - 6/25/23

Sheep It Up - 40

Stay Frosty 2 - 180

Commodore 64

Miner 2049'er - 50

Total time = 270 minutes

I really enjoy SF2 so I spent most of my game time on the HSC, though I did play a little Miner 2049'er to celebrate my 49th birthday.

I like the game but I couldn't get past level, was it 8 or 9?  I don't remember now.  But I didn't spend much time on it.  I think I will try playing this game on a regular basis.

I did the same thing with Hunchy 2 and now I know every level.

The fugoid curve of Pinball and Mechs continued all through last week. It is quite surreal to play as a mercenary where one of the scenarios takes place in Russia...

SNES

Battle Pinball - 58 min

Front Mission: Gun Hazard (jpn, Aeon Genesis translation) - 356 min

10. Dragon's Havoc (Atari 7800) - 60 min. (#8)

Top 10 systems:

1. SNES (16 games) - 1279 min. (#1)
2. Atari 2600 (5 games) - 677 min. (#3)
3. NES/Famicom (8 games) - 237 min. (#2)
4. Dreamcast (2 games) - 120 min.
5. Atari 7800 (4 games) - 115 min. (#5)
6. Atari Lynx (1 game) - 95 min. (#8)
7. Commodore 64 (1 game) - 50 min.
8. Game Boy (3 games) - 45 min.
9. Atari 8-bit (5 games) - 43 min. (#10)
10. Genesis (1 game) - 30 min. (#8)
10. Arcade (2 games) - 30 min. (#7)

Two SNES games starting on F fight for first place (sorry, I didn't manage to alliterate further) with FFMQ giving room for FMGH (yeah, we're in acronym land now). On the pre-NES side, SF on the 2600 is ahead of SF2SF on the 2600. The SNES receives a lot of attention this week and easily maintains first place on the systems list.

No changes to the 1000, 5000, 10000 Minute Clubs. With one week to go before mid-season stats, we have 13 games with more than 1000 minutes played each this year, of which 3 also exceeded 5000 minutes. At least two of those should be obvious, but the exciting thing is how close they'll be to each other after next week. Another sneak peek is that 1070 games received any minutes at all this year, which equals 9.2% of all games ever entered.
