How accurate are the 5200 games "converted" to run on Atari8bit computers as XEX's?

Well that might make me think twice about getting the XEGS with my income tax refund in which I'll be filing for even though I just got both of my W2's/1090's from my work at Safeway and also from Social Security and just getting the gear for my 5200 and ColecoVision instead of getting the 7800 repaired as well as acquiring the XEGS, in which I wanted to do both of so I can being back The Atari Report, and just merely doing "ColecoVision EXTRA!" next month and continuing to do episodes of The Atari 5200 SuperReport in which I'll be filming this week instead. As for the 2600 games maybe I also should also ditch the Flashback 9's also and get my 2600 adapter fixed as well, that would be a more economical way of doing things, just support the ColecoVision and the 5200 and ditch the rest!!!

I play all the atari consoles minus the 5200 on the newer VCS.  I also emulated Sega master and Colecovision.

It's neat to have in all in one Atari console.

You should definitely get all of them!  Love me some XEGS action, it's the only machine I don't have, I never liked the pastel buttons.

I know you're being facetious but I HAVE been in between repairing the 7800 and also reacquiring the XEGS and just not getting it and also selling the 7800 and just go with the 5200 and ColecoVision and just supporting those two in order to consolidate everything, and as for 2600 games, since the Flashback 9 is pretty much useless at least when it comes to ARM-based games, I should probably just get the VCS adapter for my 5200 fixed or get another one and use it, as well as accessorize both the ColecoVision and 5200, in which seem to have the momentum going for them along with the 2600.

There are a ton of options when it comes to controllers for both from the newly reissued Redemption 5200 to the offerings from Retro-Game-Boyz, and also the brand new games from V61/Atari Sales for the 5200 and also from CollectorVision for ColecoVision there are plenty of options I have in just those two alone, and many here will agree that I should just probably focus on those two great Third-Wave consoles and that's it.

I'll post a thread up here and see what both you guys and my Facebook fanbase thinks, after all I DO put my fans FIRST!!!

Hey, the XEGS shanked a 1200XL for its joystick ports.  Pastel buttons or not, that's one system that will get seriously mediaeval on your ass if you look at it sideways.

There's also a conversion of 8bit Pengo. The conversion left the music to be only 1 voice.

The 5200 music had multiple voices.

The Atari release version of Pengo (cartridge, and later converted XEX) for the 8-bit computers only has one music voice; but the 5200 version with multiple music voices was converted for the 8-bit computers too.

Pengo (5200).xex

Some Atari 5200 games used the numerical pad. One example I remember is the Soccer game, using the numerical pad for various types of kicks. The unofficial port to Atari 800 didn't provide a full replacement of that, as far as I know.

When I was porting my own game named TRAIN from Atari 800 to Atari 5200, I had to cut down the non-in-game music and remove the in-game music completely. Otherwise, the game wouldn't fit into a 32 KB cartridge.

I did my income tax refund process and things weren't good, goddamn Congress passed a bunch of stupid laws which lowered the amount from last year to this year.

I found out that Uncle Sam is only paying about $700.00, but, the state of Washington enacted its own laws for those like me who struggle a bit financially and they are paying me about an extra $250.00 so my total income tax refund is only $949.00 this year, so I guess the XEGS is out of reach without having to cut back on some things. I conferred with Alex Fox and he agrees that I already have both a 5200 and a ColecoVision,  and that I should stick to those two and get some gear for those two and sell the 7800 and let someone else deal with the powering issue I'm having with her rather than throw it towards another that probably won't see as much game time.

IT DOES have something to do with Atari, prior to finding out the bad news of why my refund is a whopping $400.00 less than it was last year I was gonna go after that XEGS that's currently up for grabs and has been since December, and now I have some tough decisions to make about whether or not I should follow through with getting that XEGS and getting my 7800 repaired or just folding up the tent, and stick with just my 5200, ColecoVision and Flashback 9. It all depends on whether its still even available, that, is right here:

Ray, quit derailing yet another thread to make it all about you.  It's obnoxious.

Go start a thread of your own to talk about your financial problems; they don't belong here or in other random threads you stumble into.

I'm getting over them, slowly but surely, pretty soon it'll be history, and, I have finally come to grips that I'm not going to be able to bring back The Atari Report,  that was gonna be for all of you and my fans, besides I myself think that I can't handle 4 or 5 different consoles just to put out videos that seldom get watched.

Plus how am I going to enjoy thousands of titles when I actually only play about 100 of them on each console,  having 500 titles on each is good enough. I should probably just sift through those instead of getting more consoles. That, I'm sure you will all agree,  is the best solution, in fact, I've been thinking of taking The Atari Report offline, in other words it will soon no longer exist on YouTube, I'll speak to Len about that. So, I am thinking of throwing up the 7800 here on AA and use the proceeds to get the ColecoVision multicart to go along with my 5200 multicart.

I don't recall hearing this before; but, if it's the case, I'm sure any issues could/would be remedied -- if they haven't already.

Yeah, the other thing about playing Space Dungeon on the 5200 dual sticks with the coupler is the experience itself. In 83, it was such an amazing thing to experience. Nobody used the dual sticks in that era on a home console.

The 1983 8-bit computer release of Robotron 2084 came with a joystick coupler; and it works fine with Space Dungeon.

I actually found an XEGS on eBay on Thursday with 4 carts, complete with all paperwork and accessories, and a few bonuses, for only $377.00 (NOT $600 or $700.00 CIB like what that guy in the AA marketplace wants for his) with tax & shipping,  it'll be sent out Monday morning, and in the meantime I have now designated my income tax refund ($677.00 of the $949.00 total) to pay for this month's rent, and I'm finally out of that goddamn payday loan hole, having made the last payment this past Friday!!!

I am shooting for a possible return of The Atari Report for May 1st, so there you go, this first Saturday in May you will actually have TWO things to look forward to, the Kentucky Derby, and, the triumphant return of The Atari Report!!!  It hasn't been made official yet but we do have all 4 units (2600, 5200, 7800, XEGS, plus the ColecoVision for "ColecoVision EXTRA!") either claimed or here in house.

Things are starting to turn the corner here at BIGHMW.com World Headquarters and for Ray Jackson as well!!!

The link to the auction is right here and I have already bought and paid for it!!! Now it's just a matter of getting the 7800 looked at and also getting the controllers and multicarts needed to run them on, I can't wait to dig into all the homebrews I missed out on during these past 12 months!!!

Now let's get back to the real subject matter of this thread after reading that newsflash, apparently no, the .xex files on an 8-bit may be the same, at least graphically but they play a bit differently than the 5200 originals do. Having owned (and will once again own) both a 5200 and an XEGS I should know.

I actually find it easier to control most games on the 5200 with its CX52 controllers with its onboard keypad than with a CX40 and having to navigate through the separate keyboard on an 8-bit, now some more than others best fit certain consoles, depending on the game. Star Raiders benefitted from the keypad on the 5200 controller,  as did Space Shuttle, Defender, the RealSports series of games, and also Rescue On Fractulus, while games like Albert, Gacek, Food Fight, and Time Pilot that require more RAM or strategic games like WarGames best fit the 8-bit, so it's a mixed bag.
