The light is for a few reasons, I've had an idea to make black transparent plastic just like the 5200 does for it's power light, the trackball it's self is solid plastic (non transparent). so I wanted a power light on the unit but, it also needed to be hidden like the main console did. As a test bed, I figured I would see if I could put the led in it and keep it hidden and shine through the black transparent hole. A sleeper if you will. if you look at when it is off it's almost completely invisible. even has the same textured surface. I think it just looks nicer with the hidden light. It could also be used as a helper for diagnostic if needed, the trackball requires power.
