New shell for the SIDE3 cartridge and your 1200xl

The Side3 is awesome but the provided shell does not fit into the 1200xl cartidge port. So i’ve adapted the existing 3D model so that it will fit.

This has been a known problem since the original SIDE Cart was sold. Although I commend you on your initiative to come up with an alternative via 3D printing, this really is way overdue to be done at the manufacturer level.

@lotharek any chance that this can be made right for future purchases?

Just print the case and it great!

Only problem is my Side3 is like 3-5mm too big.

The case without the Side3 inserted fits together perfectly! Justcant get my side3 cart to fit and close the case.

Here are some pics.

I wonder if this is down to the new 1200XL case being modelled on the original SIDE3, where maybe the recent SIDE3.1 PCB is everso slightly larger. I have a Side3.1 also. I've printed out the new casing myself so will try also with the SIDE3.1 PCB.

Thats what I was thinking. The new 3.1 PCB must be ever so slightly bigger.

if it is it'll be by just mm like you say as looking at the old and the new by eye there looks to be hardly anything in it:

Original SIDE3 PCB (taken from a screengrab of a FJC video from 3 years ago):

New SIDE3.1 (screengrab taken from a recent FJC video):

Perhaps in the interim file or sand the inside of the 3D printed casing a little so the SIDE3.1 PCB fits?

I only have 2x3.0 Side3. So maybe the 3.1 is bigger ?

But on your 3rd picture where the sticker "3.1" is visible, the card is not centered in the center of the shell (the hole in the center of the card). I had to push it a little so that it fits in the shell (you should hear a "click" once the hole is in place around the "pillar" for the screw). And then you may be able to close the shell and test.

Wondering if there was a fair amount of shrinkage when the part was printing?  The seam start out nice and tight but as it moves to the right, the top case is curved.  When I had my initial Davinci XYZ, I had terrible luck attempting to print cart shells.  I really want to try this in my resin printer - just not sure I have the energy for the mess and subsequent cleanup this late in the evening.

I was finally able to get my Side3 to fit the cartridge. Apparently these Side3 boards are not exactly square.

In order for me to fit the cartridge in the case, the PCB needed to be turned .5-1mm. Well I couldn't turn the board in the case. It seems the JTAG port was hitting the side of the case preventing the board from being moved.

So I cut out a hole as you can see in the photo. I was then able to get the PCB to fit.

Thanks for the case.

just a quick question @videofx - I've not had a chance to try mine but are you sure the 3D print wasn't off slightly just in case it's that particular case print rather than the PCB causing the issue? I'd imagine PCB's are manufactured to precise measurements and are square.

Also just out of curiosity which 3D printer did you use to print it? PLA+ filament?

I have an Ender 3 pro - love it. :)

There a variations in SD card, push button and jtag connector placement. Just allow a for larger variance by the means of slightly bigger than measured button holes, sd slot elongation, and jtag connector clearances. etc. This is common in manufacture but overlooked in the hobby world.

I am using a Prusa MK3S with PLA filament.

Weird. Mine take just under 2 hours to print on my Ender 3 Pro in Pla+.

What software are you using to slice and are you creating a Gcode file to print from rather than the stl?

Mine has to be converted from stl to Gcode as part of the Slicing process in Creatlu's own software which takes seconds.

This is semi transparent pla+ filament, where ignore any bed adhesive residue which has yet to be scraped off:
