Neo Geo Front Loader - A life in storage / SD Card Mod

Recommended Posts

Wanted one of these front loaders for years, but could never find one for a good price, and often they were junk or in poor physical condition. Ended up stumbling across this beauty for just shy of 100 bucks before shipping. According to the original owner (yes original owner) was bought, used for less than a couple weeks (he claims twice) and put in storage until sold to me.

Proof is in the condition, I suppose, lack of dust internally etc.

Doing a completely reversible, no-damage sd card reader mod that doesn't damage the shell in any way, and keeps the optical drive intact and working in tandem.

Currently working, though the controller ports need repair, so any advice on that would be welcome. Cleaning contacts and will go from there. Downside to something unused for so long. Often can be almost as dangerous for electronics as using it too much. Other internal maintenece from capacitors to belt/grease will be addressed.

Hi Cobra,

Excellent looking Neo Geo CD front loader you have in your collection now. Looks great for it's age and hope it gives you many years of enjoyment bro. Amazing that you purchased it from the original owner and really cool that you added the SD Loader into it as well. Just shy of 100 bucks? Now that's what I call a sweet deal.  :)

Do you have any physical games for this unit yet Cobra? Maybe we can se some videos of your unit and seeing you in action playing it someday.

Thank you for sharing this with us Cobra. Well done on scoring this nice looking NGCD front loader to add to your game collection. :)

I don't have any physical games, yet. Though, I was hoping to get some in the future. That said, I did the sd card method as loading is lightening quick vs the "let me cook a casserole" speeds of the optical drive. So there are definitely, certain games I'll be avoiding that have overly egregious load times........................or, ya know, are like a thousand bucks.

Good to know Cobra.. I personally like the NGCD units. In fact, I started off with the the CD top loader first, and purchased a front loader soon after.

My first game that I ever own for the Neo-Geo was the CD version King of Fighters' 99.. A game that I can't part with that I purchased over 20 years ago. It was the first of many soon after. :)

Thats awesome. I'm only upset that I didn't buy these games for the countless years they were worthless. Now they're expensive.

Hoping to figure out thr controller port issue this week. Assuming a trace is broken or something.

Man! You're so right Cobra! Now you've got me thinking.  I remember during the early 2000's NGCD games were so cheap in import stores that they were practically giving them away.

I recall purchasing Magician Lord, Last Resort, Blues Journey, King of Fighters 94/95, and Ghost Pilots for $3 bucks each. I felt like I hit the jackpot. Boy, do I miss those days for sure. :)

Yeah, you said it. I looked up some mediocre games tonight. Some are going for over 300 dollars. Insane.

Yeah bro. I just went on Ebay and can't believe how much NGCD games are going for. Last Resort is $80 Dollars, Blues Journey is $90. Ghost Pilots is 90+ Dollars. Magician Lord is almost $200 bucks. And that's just the minimum amounts on them. I can't believe it. 😲
