The latest in our Video History Series

The Evolution of Atari ST Vertical Flying Shooters Part 3 1989 A rising tide? In 1989 two significant things happened in the history of Atari ST vertical shooters: First, Xenon 2 was released, which is considered by many to be the best shooter of all time on the ST, and also Shoot ‘em Up Construction Kit or SEUCK was hit the market. The other games we have to look at are relatively unique, at least as far a unique can go in this genre, but overall it was not a great year for ST vertical shooters in terms of quantity, but what was released was a step up visually and technically from the average in 1988. Part 1 - Early Years:

The actual 2600 follow up, the 5200, did not come out until 1982. In this series we will discuss the hardware history and games for the SPIRITUAL 2600 successor, the Atari 400, and play through its 16K limit cartridge and game library. All of the games in this series will also work on the Atari 800 and 99% of them will work on XL and XE machines. These are affectionally called the #Atari8bit line of computers to delineate the from the 16 Bit Atari ST computers and the 8bit Atari consoles.

CRACK the SEAL!

Today we take a look at an action strategy hybrid game from 1990 called Project Neptune. Originally it was released by Infogrames in France and then altered slightly and released in the USA and UK by Epyx. The critics were mixed on this one, and so am I. Also released as Bob Morane (French) : Oceans in a slightly modified form.

We’ve combed through our archives of magazines, Public domain software, Atarimania. Fandal.cz, The HomeSoft Library, and Mobygames to find as many vertically scrolling shooters as we can. This list includes not just flying shooters, but run and gun and at least one driving game. It also includes Zaxxon perspective shooters. It does NOT include multi-directional scooters, horizontal or single screen Galaxian type games that just have a moving starfield. Those will be covered in another video. Let us know if we missed your favorite or a game you created and we’ll add it to an addendum video.
