Important assets from deals between sony and sega??

Recommended Posts

While sony decided to partner up with sega to create a sega CD addon for the sega genesis, they still were continuing on co’operating with nintendo to create a CD-rom addon for the snes, but after 3 failed deals between sony, nintendo and later philips in the party, sony decided to go alone, especially once sega refused to accept a deal with sony to make a stabdalone playstation,HOWEVER in many sega saturn motherboards you can see atleast 1 sony chip inside it,thus meaning that despite sony did goes all alone, they still were partially involved in the shadows for developing the sega saturn so sony was also depend on making some money with the sales of the sega saturn🙏😁👍

same thing with the sega CD, if you look closely you can see those sony chip(s) inside both the sega saturn motherboard in those two pictures above and the sega CD motherboard in those two pictures below, sure some would argue that about those  other chipsets inside those systems from other companies such as sanyo, samsung, toshiba or nec aside from sega’s own chips and that no company could 100% could work alone on their own without without help from other chip manufacture companies(same thing with nintendo among others),BUT still trough,, to me it’s very interesting to realize that sony was also involved with the sega CD and sega saturn in the background and it gaves us an taste at what if the sega CD became the playstation or what if the saturn saturn became the playstation,

or what if it was the other way around, imagine sony planned a CD rom addon with sega for the megadrive abd called it playstation but it was cancled, then sony went trough nintendo for creating chips for their super CD addon for the snes and nintendo’s N64 CD system (note:nintendo had the idea for CD’s for the N64 and while the 3x CD speed drive did met their requirements, but it was just  too expensive and while the cheaper 1x CD speed drive was cheaper,it was considered to be too slow) eventrough if nintendo  still would,ve refused to co’operate with sony for a 64bit CD based system, then sony would,ve still go alone with their own playstation, right?

but what if the nintendo or sega playstation did came to fruition whether if was a 16bit addon or a 32bit or 64bit system but it still would,ve failed for some reasons such as being too expensive and/or very late on the marked, piracy, lack of games and/or mechanicle failures (note:the famicom disksystem, mega CD and the ill fated 64DD addon to compensate for the lack of a CD drive just didn’t sold well as was hoped)

then it makes me wonder if sony would,ve still go alone but instead calling their new standalone console the ganestation, then we ever knows that we would,ve now a gamestation 5🤣🤣

I personally just can’t imagine that the relationship with sega or nintendo would,ve stand any long even with all those (modest) successes because sony may wouldn’t have make much profit and they may had to pay royalties to sega or sony as well to make games for it,this then could,ve eventually cut the last straw to sony to go alone anyway i guess,so i don’t think the story would,ve be much different by now, would it??

Did you even try to lookup what those chips are/do?

The CXA1645 is a color encoder, an evolution of their earlier CXA1145, its usage (of either kind actually) is not exclusive to the Saturn, SMS used it and MD as well (NeoGeo AES and NeoGeo CD used it as well, even the Amiga CD32 used one).

The CXP5084 is a 4bit uC used in tandem with Sony CD DSP chip and CD Servo chip, and no wonder given Sony+Philips defined the CD format so it's kind of expected Sony made chips for what's needed inside a CD unit .... right!

So yeah no biggie, the encoder is really there to help RGB -> PAL/NTSC composite conversion (to avoid having to have specialized video chips per region like the case of Atari VCS and 800 and so many consoles used some variation of those designs .... note there are other encoders used across the various consoles because generating a good composite signal especially in NTSC land is very finnicky so some companies opted for different solutions like the PCEngine used its own HuC6260 color encoder)

The Sony CD uC/DSP/servo chips are also unsurprising imho at that time to get a CD unit going.
