Twilightmenu++ nesDS emulator crashes with Necronancy demo rom

Recommended Posts

This probably better belongs in some nesDS or Twilightmenu++ forum, but I've searched around a bit and I can't quite figure out where to post.

I run Twilightmenu++ on my DSi XL to emulate various platforms (including my favorite Intellivision...).  I recently found this cool looking NES demo rom called Necronancy: https://artixgames.itch.io/necronancy?fbclid=IwAR3Ste3t2cAZ6RMW8VglrQxup56sgtym0Jwti4HJ1jSn_WF-a5y3XM46VwI

I can run the rom on my laptop in OpenEmu, but I haven't tried it on hardware yet.  I copied it over to my DSi to attempt some gaming there and it crashes nesDS (version 1.3d TWL).  I know nesDS isn't exactly a front-and-center concern for anyone, since the last build date seems to be 2018.  But is there anyone in the community that might want to look into what's different about this rom and maybe see about getting it to run on nesDS?

Hey Rick,

nesDS is a pretty cool accomplishment on the venerable handheld but the sheer number of mappers and special hardware in various NES carts keeps compatibility somewhat lower than some of the other emulators which don’t have to worry about that level of complexity. One of my favorite NES games is the almost official GaPlus but it glitches on nesDS as the mapper is not fully emulated.

You can see the sheer number of mappers here:

By contrast Nintellivision on the DS only has to handle a half-dozen dozen kinds of memory plus ECS banking for large games and that gets compatibility up over 98%.

Did the emulator produce a core dump upon crashing?

I don't really know.  I guess it would write a core file onto the SD card?  I've never dug in and looked.

The game doesn't even come up, the emulator just displays a screen that appears to be a reporting of the current contents of registers.

Thanks for the info.  I know just about nothing about the state of NES emulation.  I posted a comment on the developer's page for the rom as well.
