Revisiting an old paddle hack

I would not sacrifice a controller like this again these days but 20+ years ago when I did it there seemed to be no end to supply. I pulled it out for the first time in many years. All the mylar contacts needed a clean but after that it still works great. It sure makes Kaboom hell a lot easier to play. Did anyone else do this hack?

Did you make it or did you buy from somewhere/someone?  I like the idea.

I made it but it has been so long I don't really remember the details. I am sure they are buried way back in this forum somewhere. Basically it involves replacing the pot that controls left-right with one that you can attach a knob to.

Yep. Had a controller where the stick was completely broken so no saving it. Turned it into a Pole Position controller (switch on the side changes gear). Buttons are on the other side. Everything else is connected as normal. Really good for paddle games.

I made this one last year for a client. They sent in a set of 2600 paddles with broken plastics so I could use the pot and knob from them to make one good looking and working 5200 paddle controller. I found and used a couple of washers to fit within the center space to keep the pot stem centered, and a larger washer to lock it all together inside. I was able to reuse the controller boot to hide the nuts and washers holding it all together and was able to set it so it was quite near flush with everything making for a pretty stock look when it was done.

If I were to try and do this again though, I think it would be best for someone to 3D print a bracket that would more easily fit in the space and secure the pot better etc. Would make it quite an easy task for those wanting one for breakout, or pole position...etc.

So roughly about 15 years ago, I did the 2600 paddle pot in the 5200 controller hack. And was really happy, untill I started to use it, to me there was just to many things I didn't like about it, the only thing I was really happy about was the look of it. So mostly with pole position in mind, I wanted something that felt better and could shift the gears, without external switches, it needed to look like it was factory made. So this is what I did, factory 5200 pots in there normal locations, the upper pot modified for switching gears, tied to a internal micro n/o switch on lower right side, and gear drive to run the lower pot. So since we're sharing here's mine. And then only a couple of years ago I made a twin brother, cause the one was lonely, lol.
