Ok.  Since I have to pick exclusively hardware or software, I figure I'll be a smart a**, then.   :-D

If I were to pick "Hardware", I'd be totally screwed.  Hardware states:  "Hardware - Old and new. Atari 400/800. XL/XE. FPGA. Emulation used for hardware development."

There is no mention of any software at all.  So, I guess I could put my nice shiny Atari 800XL in a display case and, occasionally, drool over it.  When I get it out and plug it in, I guess I'll get a READY prompt.  but, without software, it would be like having a mint condition show quality Mercedes 300SL Gullwing Coupe and being deprived of gasoline.

So, I'll have to pick the software.  If I use the same analogy, at least the gasoline will run my garden tractor.

I prefer hardware. When I'm searching eBay, I look after 65XE or Lynx I, things which are missing in my collection. I would not buy old games or other software.

That does not mean that I don't buy software at all, e.g. Flob (cart), Last Squadron (digital), Wyvern Tales (Lynx) or Gravatic mines (Jag).

Sometimes I think this forum is too serious. It was just supposed to be a fun thing. If you have a preference pick it, if not don't. If you have trouble generally distinguishing the two or separating them then I guess this poll isn't for you! You like both equally or can't tell. I can tell by reading the posts over the years which folks are which, generally speaking. The poll was purposely designed to disallow fence-sitters. Either choose or don't vote. For fun!

I don't mind mods closing it down if it is causing people to become upset.

I think I understand what you're asking... When I started out, it was all about software.  I was enthralled by the "shiny new thing" of home video games.  But as time wore on, games provided less and less of a kick.  I wrote quite a few Basic or hybrid-Basic utilities; then even that wore thin.  But hardware still provides nice new "toys."  It is still enticing, so hardware is my answer to your question!  P.S. I am still amazed by Altirra and Phaeron's knowledge.  Lots of others, too, but Altirra stands out.
