Question: do you think it would be possible to make the emulator update the bottom graphics depending on which part of the game is being executed? That sounds a little difficult for my skill level But not impossible. To be honest, when I play Bank Panic, I map keypad 1,2,3 to Y,X,A so I can just press the DS buttons which is easier than looking down at the touch-screen. I like your thinking and it would give DS users an advantage. This came to mind because a couple of my current projects turn the keypad into a flip phone style keyboard for alphanumeric entry.
