If original Atari 2600 paddle controllers work on the Retron 77, these new paddle controllers should also work.

You are most likely correct.  However, experience tells me that no matter how solid the logic, controller compatibility also sometimes relies on dark magic.

Well, I know the CX-30+ controllers work on original consoles.  So it really depends on whether the Retron also works with original paddle controllers. If not, I'd then assume that the new paddle controllers also will not work.

Atari website says original controllers work on plus, and vice versa, so I'd assume so. I heard paddles didn't originally work on the 77, but they since fixed that through patches, so it should. I never got the 77 due to paddle incompatibility, but its cheap(er) than the plus, maybe ill see about picking one up.

I like the R77.  I really do. Keep in mind ...

The community build is flaky on some models (pot luck but the orange models seem to be most affected).  You'll also have added expense (and eyesore) of dongles cables & adapters to get everything working.

Without the community build you'll be stuck with a dated version of stella (Asteroids has some occasional video artefacts for exampe) but TBF I find the paddles work better. Also a limitation of 17 roms.

The 2600+ is worth the extra.  It's made by somebody who gives a shit & it shows. Obviously cart only.

If you're mainly after loading ROMs over a pile of carts, the Gamestation Pro is where it's at.  26 52 & 7800 plus more.  The joysticks are hit & miss (so bad in pacman ms&jr); but ps4&xbox controllers work straight away, if that's your bag.  Not having a good "classic" style joystick is its greatest downfall.

With having the plus & GSP, the retron is likely retired.  Good luck, hope you get what's best for your needs.
