Snoopy and the Red Baron

I've been on a cartoon theme this week, playing Taz, Road Runner, and Snoopy. I've always liked how Snoopy looked, almost Activision-like, but it always felt like the controls were broken. Snoopy's doghouse doesn't always respond to the controls, it feels like it has a mind of its own. Then I did something unheard of... I checked the manual. There I found this sentence, "Game 3 is the only version that does not automatically guide Snoopy away from the direction of the Red Baron..."  So I switched to game variation 3 and the game plays perfectly.

Well good to hear that the game CAN play perfectly.  I don't think I knew that when I tried the game.

 

So why does it steer you away from the Baron?  Isn't the point trying to take down the Red Baron?

Since it's a kids game, I think the intent was to make it easier by automatically steering you away from the Red Baron's line of fire. But I don't think it succeeded. The game plays much better with that feature turned off.
