This past week I played:

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 for PS2 - 341 minutes

Super Mario Bros.: Level-Headed for NES - 42 minutes

Zelda 2024-1 by Jim B. (Hack) for NES - 295 minutes

Zelda 2024-3 by Tim D. (Hack) for NES - 221 minutes

Progress:

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 - I completed the game on Easy mode unlocking all characters.

Super Mario Bros. Level-Headed - I played and completed 2 games with the original graphics on normal difficulty.

Zelda hacks - I played and completed both hacks. Both hacks were a bit trickier as I had to use the recorder just to reach inaccessible areas of the overworld!

I am also posting late this week.  I wrapped up two VR games for PC in Battlezone (aka Battlezone VR, aka Battlezone Gold Edition) and Slinger VR.  Both had medium length "campaigns" that I finished over the weekend.  I will write up something on them this week in the "modern games beaten" thread.

The overall list is a bit more modern oriented this week, having 7 of the top 10 games on post-2000 systems with Fortnite on the PS5 in first place. The pre-NES list is evenly shared between the Atari 8-bit computer games and the Atari 2600 games. Systems wise, the modern PC, the NES/Famicom and the PS5 battle in the top.

No changes to the 1000, 5000, 10000 Minute Clubs. However I merged the various Pong, Atari Video Pinball and this Nintendo Color TV Game that isn't a Pong machine, into a new category for Dedicated Console. And yes, I also merged the various in-flight entertainment systems into one category, though it is even less commonly logged.

Do you own this?  From your pictures, it looks like maybe you played it at a convention or some sort of game show?

I am going to Japan in July and am thinking about bringing a SINGLE gaming item back with me.  These pre-Famicom consoles have come up as a cool souvenir that you can only really get in Japan and something where the interest level will likely be a bit lower.  Do you have any idea how this one was acquired?

This was at a retro game convention. The guy said he bought it in Japan as junk and fixed it up, but he didn't say more.

I believe the Color TV Games 6 and 15 (?) are more common, but also are Pong variants, though sold by Nintendo. Probably you can't pick and choose what to buy, but have to look for decent offers in the places you visit. After many years, I get the feeling that even Japanese people are starting to care about their technological history, not only looking forward at what's next, meaning there is a domestic collector market.

Edit: OTOH, Wikipedia suggests that the four Nintendo consoles sold 1M + 1M + 500K + 500K = 3 million in total, while it estimates only 150K consoles of Atari and Sears combined Pong consoles were sold. That seems like a very low number as you see various Atari Pong consoles for sale almost all the time. It suggests that the entire Coleco Telstar series sold 1 million.

This past week, from April 29th to May 5th, 2024, marked another week without gaming. The only gaming-related activity I engaged in was the continued development of my adventure game "The Grindy Adventure" on chooseyourstory.com, alongside experimenting with various AI models. Interestingly, Copilot now offers a feature to rewrite any text input on the Internet. As a test, I attempted to rewrite this message using that function. Initially, it seemed ineffective for this particular text, yet when I noted its failure, it paradoxically began to work. Peculiar, indeed.

Atari 2600

Kaboom 45 for HSC. Atarian7 wrapped this up already with a week left with a monster score. So far a very distant second place for me. Congrats on that score Atarian7.

Solar Fox 77 mins

Apr 29-May5:
Just HSC playing this week. I put it all off since it was a 3 week challenge, to the last week. I have been messing around with some Famicom Disk System emulation, but not really enough time to constitute playing. By the looks of it, most of the best stuff made it overseas. There is also a small handful of games that got English translation that I intend to checkout.

I also found some of my old Legend of Zelda hand crafted MS Paint maps on an old Pc hard drive. I had recreated all the Overworld and First Quest dungeons by shrinking the 16x16 tiles to 4x4 equivalent tiles. Making the map 16 times smaller than the ones you will find on GameFAQs. I started these back in the mid-1990s when 56k dialup was the norm. I’ve been “playing” LoZ with cheats enabled to finish off the Quest2 overworld and dungeon maps.

This past week I played:

Renegade for NES - 13 minutes

Super Mario Bros. for NES - 35 minutes

Super Mario Bros. 2 (J) (aka The Lost Levels) for Famicom Disk System / NES - 29 minutes

Zelda 2024-2 by Jim B. (Hack) for NES - 173 minutes

Zelda 2024-2 by Tim D. (Hack) for NES - 198 minutes

Zelda 2024-3 by Jim B. (Hack) for NES - 338 minutes

X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse for PC - 929 minutes

Progress:

Renegade, then Super Mario Bros. - I got a scrambled screen when starting my NES which is less common these days, and I had my Powerpak inserted so I decided to record some gaming and played Renegade on difficulty 1 to see if I could complete it like that. Then I played through the first quest of Super Mario Bros. I succeeded at both.

Super Mario Bros. 2 FDS - I tried to keep playing with a scrambled screen even though this game is more difficult. I got pretty far but the game started recovering as I played and I decided to quit before finishing.

Zelda hacks: I completed Jim's 2nd and 3rd games. I mostly completed Tim's 2nd game that he finally gave me, but saved and quit because there was a glitch with Ganon. He said he fixed it and sent the fixed copy to me so I will try again sometime, using my same save file and see if it works.

X-Men Legends II PC: I started a new game on a clean install of X-Men Legends 2 and played all the way through Easy mode, unlocking Iron Man and Deadpool. I mostly used a team of Cyclops, Iceman, Jean Grey and Wolverine to complete it more quickly than when I constantly switched characters to use them all on PS2. [The graphics are better on PC by far, and on newer faster PCs the loading times are almost nonexistent.]

Then I cut and pasted my install and save to an external drive and copied my first modded install over to program files and started a new game. For this second playthrough, I am mostly using the MarvelMods character Angel by their forum member Enigma, which is the community's newest version of that character. I made it to the beginning of Chapter 3 and have mostly had Cyclops, Iceman and Beast (another mod by Enigma) as Angel's supporting team members.

Week of 4/29/24 - 5/5/24

I don't know if others have this experience, but when I'm really busy most of my gaming ends up being on the toilet. I'd much rather be playing my Atari or C64 but those are hard to bring in there.

Atari 2600

Juno First - 10

Meooow! 2 - 10

iOS

Duolingo - 35

Jumbline 2 - 39

Rock On - 4

Total time = 98 minutes
