Essential Homebrew

Recommended Posts

What you consider the absolutely essential homebrew titles for the Atari 8-Bit computers?

The titles that are so good they make the commercial titles of the 80's and 90's look primative by comparison?

Prince of Persia, Yoomp!, The Last Squadron, Flob. etc. etc.

Here's a similar thread I started a few years ago:

My motivation, besides learning about some really cool Atari 8-bit homebrew games I may not have heard of previously, was to look for new Atari 8-bit games to publish in the AtariAge Store. Which is something I will pursue once I get the store moved to new software, something I am now working on with the advent of the new year. :)

Plenty to mention but recent (last 15 years) standouts also include Ridiculous Reality, Bosconian, Time Pilot, Scramble, Bomb Jack/Jake, Marbled.

The 4 arcade conversions I mentioned exceeded what I'd have expected our machine to be capable of by a good margin.

Hopefully soon we can add Galaga to the list.

There are so many it’s hard to say…@Beeblebrox list covers many.

All are great, just the fact that we get new titles for a 40-something year old computer is fantastic.

The one game that still blows my mind, however, is Space Harrier.  It’s better than any of the official 8-bit versions and really captures the vibe of the arcade game.  Hard to believe that’s running on an Atari 8-bit platform.

Stunt car racer, Bosconian and Animal party. I also really enjoyed disc 'o pop.. was that the name?

Bosconian is my favourite (most played) new release of recent years, soooooo addictive (closely followed by Last Squadron and POP)....

tbh preferred Bomb Jake...

I must admit I've only played Gacek, (stock and VBXE versions). So what is the reason for your preference just out of interest? (Where I am assuming you are comparing Bombjack with the stock version of Gacek, rather than the VBXE version?) :)

Is anyone actively working on this?  I thought work had stopped....

Nevermind I see it was asked and answered later in the thread.

Yes the stock version.

I prefer the UI/FE of Bomb Jake and the masking around the bombs is more elegant in there than the stock hardware version of Gacek.

Overall I think Bomb Jake is also a little prettier graphically - or perhaps closer to the arcade on stock...

There's a bunch of game hacks that would be on my list too:

Donkey Kong - improved graphics and sound

Popeye - Improved graphics

Moon Patrol Redux

Pac-man Arcade (not sure if this is a hack or coded from the ground up)

Miner 2049er with improved Bounty Bob sprite
