I think I also like the original aesthetics/style of Bubsy best of the ones I’ve seen so far.

 

Here I’ve given/modded him to have both eyes open.

 

 

Often easier for players/gamers to ‘connect’ with a character if they can see him/her straight in the eyes.

 

I think they’ve spun conceptions of cat-cunning sometimes in a too unsympathetic direction (for a protagonist/mascot).

 

Sure, he should have 1000 flaws and 10000 vicious ways to die on (cartoon-style), but he needs to have something to him that makes the player believe he has core of sympathic ‘good-guyness’ to him when push comes to show.

Sonic looks edgy, but… he shows his badass side to resque animals.

Mario looks, sometimes, stern and dedicated… and, well, thats it. Thats about as badaas as Mario ever will be. And hey, it works if the concept is a protagonist/mascot figure.

 

If Bubsy only overestimates himself, always is edgy-vicious in facial expression, he seems like an asset-character, not a real protsgonist.

Reason for dropping it; the publishers feared for the legal consequences if they used it. That is, legal consequences  coming out of 90ies kids taking this Bubsy as role-model in everything in their lives and rebelling viciously against their authority of choice: the publishers.
