garetjax
What is a good gamepad for the st or is there an adapter to use a modern gamepad ? thanks
doctor_shred
Best Electronics do a Jagpad to Atari 2600 adapter that works well with the ST. Only the d pad and B fire button work but it keeps it Atari Also, if you have an STE you can use the Jagpad for the handful of games that support the enhanced joystick ports on the side. +DarkLord
Exxos's Online Store used to sell the JeST? (I think that was it's name. I have one for my STacy. It's basically a Playstation 2 joypad adapted to the ST...
RodLightning
This one will be available soon. It should work with the ST in a standard controller port. It is an Atari branded product. Fire button one would work on ST games. I'm not sure if any ST games ever supported the 7800 scheme for button 2. https://atari.com/products/cx78-gamepad Edit: Oops, I read online that the the original 7800 controllers would confuse the ST and cause problems, although I would swear that I have plugged in and used a 7800 proline controller with my own ST. Atari's description sort of claims backward compatibility with "all atari systems". Maybe they have different logic inside than the original 7800 controllers? I do plan on trying one on my ST when they are available in May 2024. Maybe the new one will work as-is? Sorry for any confusion. Here's the article I read on the subject: https://ctrl-alt-rees.com/2018-11-14-atari-7800-controller-st-compatibility-modification.html Edited March 10 by RodLightning
bluemonday
The Cheetah Bollistick may also be an option. https://www.ami64.com/product-page/cheetah-bollistick-joystick-for-amiga-and-c64

danm
I've always liked the Sega Mega Drive controllers. I sold my Mega Drive in the early 90's but I ended up buying some clone, 6 button Mega Drive controllers to use with my XberryPi Spectrum Next clone and I wanted to use these same controllers on my ST so I rewired one end of a joystick extension cable, which now allows me to use Mega Drive and Master System controllers on my ST and Amiga https://www.atari-wiki.com/index.php?title=How_To_rewire_an_Atari_joystick_extension_cable_to_use_Sega_controllers Link-e : 2 X 6 button game controller for SEGA Genesis/Megadrive/Master System https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07KLTPTTN
doctor_shred
So, has anyone tried the new CX70 pad on an ST yet? It would be a massive bonus if they'd sorted the compatibility issue of the originals.
theboyfromanotherplanet
I was playing Great Giana Sisters STE with a Jagpad last night (via an adapter) and in a fit of rage/annoyance that the Jagpad dpad is so lame 🙂, I ordered one. It's arriving today. I wasn't aware of any incompatibilities before ordering, so I hope whatever it is, is fixed. I'll let you know.

If you plug it in after boot then it's fine - but then you have to unplug it again before you next reboot. Reading around, I wonder if it's because pin 5 is wired. On the ST, pin 5 (on port 1) is reserved but actually connected to the keyboard MUX I think. Anyway, I'm going to mod the second fire button to 'up'. I may test whether disconnecting pin 5 makes a difference. Maybe I should just get a Sega pad instead 🙂

I really like these Best adapters. I did find one incompatibility with a PS/2 to ST mouse adapter I own. If the Best adapter and Jag pad are being used RIGHT mouse button will not work. +DarkLord
Hmm, back in the day we were always told not to plug/unplug mouse/joystick with the machine on... Has this changed? Thanks.

Probably not Although I've never had any problems - so far 🙂 It's probably safe advice when there's a risk of the pins not connecting at the same time, i.e. power before ground perhaps. I'm no expert
theboyfromanotherplanet
For anyone interested, this is how I modified the CX78+ to work with the ST. Button 1 becomes 'UP' 2

That was one of the things they touted over the Mac's single button mouse. It's technically possible to re-wire a joystick to match the pinout of the mouse/joy port. Mouse button #2 is connected internally to joy #1s fire button, so you couldn't attach a second joystick at the same time. This odd pinout (for joysticks at the time) is probably why no one bothered back then.
theboyfromanotherplanet
So the (modified) CX78+ isn't too bad and works well on most games I've tried. However, I've noticed is that the pillar on the back of the dpad (not sure what it's really called) is too short. The dpad doesn't rock on it properly unless you press the whole dpad down slightly. So multi-presses are a problem. This isn't a big deal on slower games (it's a game changer in Great Giana Sisters STE) but was jamming a bit in Xenon 2. Maybe this will improve over time as the domes give a little. Despite this, it's still more comfortable to use than the JagPad and will be my "go to" for now.
