VLM emulation possible through GameDrive?

Recommended Posts

Whilst I am waiting for my GD to arrive from SAG I have been preparing and pondering.

This made me think of the possibility to emulate the VLM using the GD. Maybe this was brought up before and I missed it?

When I had purchased my Jaguar CD on launch, I had a pretty significant audio CD collection. I guess I was the oddball who enjoyed playing my albums through game consoles and I really dug Minter's VLM on this thing. I wonder if it would possible in the future to simulate it and play back CD audio disc images using the GD and experience it again.

I am probably one of the few that would actually want to do such a thing, but man would that be cool!

It can be done, yes, I have VLM running, but I haven’t actually fed audio cd’s into it as yet.

That is awesome! I'd love to rip my "Planes, Trains, & Automobiles" movie soundtrack and play it through the VLM :)

Very much look forward to this, should it become a working thing.

Hope so though... really don't want to try and find and waste money on another JagCD unit.

Same here. I sold my JagCD a while back, and the VLM is the ONLY thing I miss from it.

Was curious how VLM could work in this case.

VLM itself is a built in feature of the CD unit.  The CD played would be an image of the audio CD.

If the VLM were to see the CD image and looked for a certain image, the audio CD you wanted to play would need to be the same name.

Would work great if you had a particular audio CD you liked to play on VLM.  For me, Yes - Talk for nostalgia reasons.

It doesn't work that way. VLM just asks the JagCD hardware to start playing whatever CD's in the drive, and gets the audio data back. There's no name involved, and most audio CDs don't have anything resembling one anyways.

Yep that's kinda my point.   How would the Game Drive display a "CD in the drive" for the VLM to recognize and play?

It would boot VLM with a CD in the drive, but swapping CD’s it would require VLM to be modified. It could be bodged by having a playlist you could play through, perhaps.

"CD in the drive" at this point would be if you were using the Game Drive through the CD expansion and physically had a "CD in the drive".

Yeh, I figured the VLM software would need to be changed to see a new source, or even select from a directory.

Part of me wonders if the rules of how CD games are playing from the Game Drive would apply here?  That the Audio CD file would need to be saved as a contiguous file?

No, the CD in the emulated CD drive. It would be the same as games, CD's would need to be converted to JCD format.

I've already rebuilt VLM from source, but changing of CD's from a UI would require a fair bit of work.

That is truly cool the VLM has already been rebuilt, and from source even!

Like I said before, for the VLM I know I had one or two CDs I would play on the VLM from time to time.   So for a while people would need to change the CD manually when the SD card is connected to a computer.
