Idea: "Hacker Snack" contest.

Recommended Posts

If anyone has read Orson Scott Card's "Lost Boys" (I heartily recommend it), there is a fictional game the main character wrote for the Atari 8-bit computer. There are various descriptions of it throughout the book, enough to write up a specification of the game. I thought it would be interesting to see if we could have a contest for implementing the game, and see if Orson Scott Card will judge them (he used to write articles on Atari programming in the past.)

Anyone else think this is a good idea?

Here is all the information I was able to glean from the novel. Also it's important to note that although the novel is set in 1983, it was written 1991/92, and many have noted similarities between Hacker Snack and Chip's Challenge.

  • The enemies move towards the player, they don't have random movement.
    •   They also get a speed boost on every level.
  • The game has a scoring system, tracking up to at least 999,999.
  • Each level is referred to as a room.
  • Rooms have back doors out, the discovery of which is essential to winning the game.
  • If these secrets are not discovered, you end up in a level where the enemies move so fast that they can't be dodged.
  • There are at least 20 levels.
  • The main character is called Rodney, a stereotypical nerd with glasses and "a melvin"
  • The items you collect are computer chips and burgers
  • Each room is only one screen.
