ApolloBoy
When I power up my 5200 without a game inserted, the screen doesn't show anything. Is this OK, or is my 5200 dead?

bjk7382
I don't own a 5200 yet either, so I don't know what it should do without a game, but my best suggestion would be to get a common game and throw it in there.
MrRetroGamer
You need a cart in there for it to display something on the screen. If you put the cart in and STILL get a black screen, then it's time to worry!

+Cafeman
According to what I've read about the 5200, you don't even have to turn the system off when switching carts. It is designed to turn on and have a blank screen if nothing is inserted -- unlike most systems. Dan B., can you confirm this?

There might be a short period of time where the 5v line is not making contact but the IO lines are, and that could be bad, especially for any homebrews based on eproms. classics
The 5200 has 2 'interlock' pins on the cartridge. When you connect these two pins together by inserting a cartridge it 'makes' the circuit and rest of the 5200 powers on. A blank black screen is normal if its on with no cart inserted. ApolloBoy
Well, I got Countermeasure in the mail today, and the verdict... It works! The Atari logo came up, and the game came up well. Hooray!

This is not a predecessor to the "sad face" computer on a Mac or anything like that...
