Chris-in-NJ
I've just noticed that there's a sliding chip protector in my 7800 Robotron cartridge, similar to the ones that all Atari-made 2600 cartridges have, only it doesn't look into place. Are they all like this or have I discovered a new cartridge variation? Certainly none of my other 7800 games has one...
bjk7382
My 7800 dig dug is like that. So is my waterworld, which you can see Here.
+Mitch
Yeah, some of the '86 releases have those dust covers. Just reusing old cart casings I imagine. Mitch
Chris-in-NJ
Just noticed that my Dig Dug is like that too. The two halves of the cartridge case don't quite line up properly on these two games, so I'd guess that Mitch is right. Why'd they stop I wonder. Tramiel cheapness? CincYnoTi
you will find some atari 2600 cartridges like that with 1983 copyrights on them. you will also find some atari 7800 games with that sliding/no-locking protector. my theory is that atari needed a design that would work for both 2600 and 7800 games. the original locking protector did not have enough gap to accomodate the 7800 pcb. so they designed a cartridge protector that would work for both 2600s and 7800s. they used these on both 2600 & 7800 games until they ran out of them. they were replaced with the open ended style you find for almost all 7800 games and the majority of the red label 2600 games. this was probably a cheaper production model that was designed in the post-warner, 1984, cost cutting era. i only have one or two 7800 games with this protector...pole position II is one of them i think. ApolloBoy
My Asteroids has it. Also, I've noticed my Asteroids' end label is reflective. Could that be a tell-tale sign that a cart has the dust cover?
