Inky
I've been downloading some games I never heard of for MAME, and I found a little game by Sega called Astro Blaster, and I noted some striking similarities between it and Megamania... 1 The ship looks similar 2) The fuel bar 3) some aliens look the same and fly in similar patterns.. Is this just coincidence? DL it and try it yourself!
MattyXB
I love Megamania. And I have an Atari 2600 VCS game that calls Space Raid and its the same gameplay. It has only other graphics. The ship looks other and the aliens too. Its from Australia. Matthias
NE146
I'm pretty sure Megamania came out later than Astro Blaster. Although a lot of the arcade shooters back then weren't very different from each other, you're right that Astro Blaster and Megamania share a couple of similar gameplay elements that you mentioned. That sure does bring back some memories though. Those were the days I constantly played all those crappy arcade shooters (Astro Blaster, Astro Fighters, Uniwars, Pisces, Uniwars, etc) and yeah I remember getting Megamania and indeed thinking that it reminded me of Astro Blaster (sans the "time-warp" feature of course). Back then I considered ANYTHING that somewhat resembled an arcade experience at home to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, and with megamania there definitely was. yknow.... I think I got Demon Attack before Megamania because I remember saying "it aint as good as Demon Attack".. but that's another story.... ;P
Vic George
Megamania to me seems more like a parody of Astro Blaster than a rip-off, since what you're shooting at aren't aliens but burgers, cookies, bugs, tires, diamonds, steam irons, bowties, and tumbling dice. Scott Stilphen
Without a doubt, it's based on Astro Blaster. Other coin-op 'inspired' Activision games are Kaboom (Atari Avalanche) and Dragster (Atari Drag Race)
ratfink
I've played that game on MAME as well. It is very similar. I wonder which game came first?
