MAME doesn't save hi scores...any ideas?

Yeah, I noticed that too! Just for goofs I've been trying to see if I can't beat the world record for Bank Panic and I wouldn't mind having the high scores saved.

BTW, I'm nowhere close - my best so far is somewhere in the 700,000 range. Whoever had 1,200,000 points was either a machine or had a spotter, I think! :)

Well, I downloaded the alternate hiscore.dat file they listed at mame.net and put it in my main Mame32 directory and that did the trick for me!

Thanks for the tip! Amazing how long you can play something like this and not know something so simple!

I've never tried Guzzler, I'll have to check it out. My three obsessions right now are beating 10-yard Fight (seems to be all luck at the last level), getting through all 5 difficulty levels of each stage in Circus Charlie (level select) sequentially, and Bank Panic like I said.

My wife thinks I'm nuts, but my 4-year old kid thinks it's pretty cool.

Yup downloaded the hiscore.dat file but still no saves. I thought the dat file was for games that did support hi-scoring?

Well, the hiscore.dat file is just a list telling MAME where (in memory) games store their high-scores so that MAME can save that information and restore it when you start the game again. If a game isn't listed in the file, then you can't save high scores for it at all.

Well some games function only by locating a special NVRAM file. I remember having to do this for Q-Bert specifically.

I can't explain why I needed this special file, but it was true.

Some games need a special nvram file, as they won't work with just the hiscore.dat.
