Albert
Did you know that the unreleased Atari 7800 game Klax has three impossible levels right at the very end? According to programmer David Dentt, he put these three "impossible" levels after the original 100, but very few people are aware of their existence. The levels aren't actually impossible, but you'll need to be very clever in order to beat them. David Dentt has graciously hacked Klax so everyone can now try each of these three levels without having to play through the first 100. You can read more about each of these levels over on AtariProtos.com, and you can try the levels yourself by downloading the zip file attached to this message. Enjoy!klaximpossibleroms.zip
Tempest
I just want to say that I have beaten each of these levels and they are all in fact winnable. The last one is a bit tricky however (think outside the box a bit). Tempest
Crimefighter
Well without even playing the solution is obvious. Impossible level one is beaten by catching five tiles of the same color, dump two between the columns, catch a couple more, dump three in one column then immeadiately dump the last two between the columns to make a "T" shaped KLAX before the 50pts. award disappears. Same concept with #2, but it seems you only get one crack at it. Catch five wild tiles, dump one to make a vertical, but before the point award display disappears dump the four tiles in the middle column to get the diagonal. #3, no idea without playing it. MrRetroGamer
Level 2 from this hack doesn't seem to include the set-up tiles on the board that Matt's site shows as being present at startup. Not sure how this affects strategy for the level.
Tempest
Really? I'll have to look into that. They should be there (otherwise you'll never beat the level). What emulator are you using? I tested all these in MESS and they worked perfectly (although the last level is a little tough due to timing issues with the emulator). Crimefighter
In that case, set up the wild tiles as displayed then make a vertical in column 4, then dump three or four in the center.

Tempest
You know I vaugly remember this problem. I think it's a bug in the rom file and David sent me a new one. I'll dig around my hard drive and see if I have it. Tempest
Crimefighter
I have to wonder if these levels are hidden in the Sega Genesis version too?
Tempest
I have to wonder if these levels are hidden in the Sega Genesis version too? Nope, these were made specially by David. So unless he did the Genesis version as well they won't be in there. Tempest
bjk7382
So is there any way to get .bin files from the .a78?
Tom
So is there any way to get .bin files from the .a78? just strip off the first 128 bytes, which form the a78 header (for instance with dd)

Yeah, I am too, but I figured if I didn't respond and someone else saw that post they would go ahead and do it. I know I can't figure that type of stuff out (what the heck does dd stand for anyway?) desiv
... (what the heck does dd stand for anyway?) Since you asked... Here's a decent guess I've found: (btw, I always assumed 'data dump' myself) It's quite possible no one knows anymore. (See the Unix shell FAQ for a similar situation with "rc".) However, the Jargon File (and equivalently _The New Hacker's Dictionary_) have an entry for "dd" used as a transitive verb, derived from the Unix command. It notes that dd's syntax is probably a parody of JCL (from MVS and other IBM mainframe OSes), and implies that the command name itself may come from JCL's "DD cards". (DDs are used in JCL to specify data sets - the name means "dataset definition".) "Disk Dump", etc. are likely back-formations. Fiscops' suggestion that "dd" is a hash-collision-formation from "Copy and Convert" and "cc" is cute but implausible; I'm highly dubious without a trustworthy source to back it up. :-) desiv

Skah T
Here's my guess for the first one. I haven't played Klax in ages. Drop two rusts in column 4, two in column 5, and then one more in column 4. That will get a diagonal that removes the rust in column 3. From there it should be easy to get a horizontal. I thought I had a solution to #2, but the wilds make it difficult. And #3 would be too hard for me even if the game weren't cheating.
Tempest
#3 would be too hard for me even if the game weren't cheating. #3 is kinda odd. It's really just a matter of patience. You basically have to start a chain reaction that will score all the points in one swoop. knowing how to start that chain reaction is the key...
