Inky
I love the lynx. I think its the greatest handheld system EVA, and I have been greatly enjoying it hte last three days. But, my question is why do the lynx manuals have to suck so hard? If theyre not on the back of a godforsaken poster, thy're the stupid black-and-white little fat monstrosity. I mean, I was looking at the Crystal Mines one, hopeing to find out what the various power ups do (not all are evident), and all the black-and-white manual explains is the TNT. Well, DUH, I coulda figured that out! Plus, thy're 90 million pages long becfause they have to have instructions in english, french, german, swahili, agupokupi, and pig-spanish. THEN, then they have to refrence a screen shot, they put (see image #1 at back of manual). WTF! I want the images right THERE, damnit! Lynx manuals are another one of Tramiel's major screw-ups. Albert
The poster manuals are also a pain in the neck to scan. ..Al
+Sauron
Honestly, how many people really read game manuals? I'll agree that the Lynx manuals were never anything to write home about. I do like the few that are posters, though.
dgo
I think the posters are the nicest manuals I've ever seen for any game system I love them so much I plan on framing some of them and hanging them on the wall! The other ones are mediocre I agree, but who needs them?
+davidcalgary29
Let's not forget that the manual for Alpine Games is in colour.
SwedenLynxer
I don't think the Lynx manuals are that bad! The Atari manuals changed quite a bit over the years. 1989-1995. From the first all-on-one-big-page manual, to the first grey booklet-manuals, to the posters, and back to the many-different-language manual type.... The posters look very nice yes, but are big, clumsy and hard to read. I like the old 1989-1990 manuals! They are all well written, with a lot of humor and a lot of useful background info! Just read the intro story for Xenophobe, Blue Lightning or in the Slime World manual where you will find Todds diary! You will get the whole background story which I think give the game more deep. It makes it more fun to play. More fun to blast aliens, kill bad guys or solve puzzles when you know WHY you are doing it, right? Honestly, how many people really read game manuals? Sauron, you don't know what you are missing! Later I think the manuals became more boring, with just short background stories. A while ago the author of some of these manuals/posters from was on this forum! Intresting reading: http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3654 I put together this list of ATARI manuals. I know some games may have many different manuals. But this is what my manuals looks like: Old original grey manuals/papers: Blue Lightning, Chips Challenge, Electrocop, Gates of Zendocon, Gauntlet, Klax, Ms. Pac-man, Paperboy, Rampage, Roadblasters, Robo-Squash, Rygar, Shanghai, Slime World, Xenophobe. Posters: APB, Awesome Golf, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Block Out, Hard Drivin, Ishido, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Land, Scrapyard Dog, STUN Runner, Super Skweek, Tournament Cyberball, Turbo Sub, Viking Child, Xybots. Manuals with 6 languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch): Batman Returns, Dracula, Dinolympics, Dirty Larry, Hydra, Lynx Casino, Pinball Jam, Pitfighter, Power Factor, Shadow of the Beast, Steel Talons, Switchblade II, World Class Soccer. Manuals with 5 languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian): Basketbrawl, Hockey, Kung Food, Rampart. Manuals with 4 languages (English, French, German, Dutch): Gordo 106. Manuals with 3 languages (English, French, German): Battlezone 2000, Jimmy Connors Tennis, Lemmings, Malibu Bikini Volleyball, Ninja Gaiden 3. Manuals with 2 languages (English, French): Baseball Heroes, Crystal Mines II, Toki. Manual with only english: Super Astroides/Missile Command. Don't think there was many swahili manuals, Inky FATEST manual?: Lynx Casino. 80 pages! Only Atari manual in color: Warbirds Worst manual: Checkred Flag. This "manual" is only a little bit of paper. (Super of Road also had this type of "manual") Edited September 12, 2005 by SwedenLynxer
chris_lynx1989
bubble trouble,t-tris and sokomania only were a bit of paper, too. i don't alpine games on your list, where is it? it is in color i understand. yes,i like a good insightful manual for a lynx game, too! i hate the multi- page and multi-language ones myself, you know. i rather liked the ones that were done for a short time on posters.i'll admit they were hard to get a hold of and use at times though. i loved the color they had to offer!! some background on the game or characters is a plus at times as well. --the lynxer
pynew
I must say i like the booklets better than the poster types as they are neater to store and better to read,I don't like games without instructions, although i dont keep boxes. Also I thought i saw a poster type for chequered flag,is there such an item or am i just imagining it. [/quote'] Yes, and SIMIS, Lynx Othello, Lexis, Ponx, Fat Bobby and other new Telegames releases also just had a bit of paper for manual. New games from Songbird has CD inserts. I only listed old games released by Atari. Ok...and Super of Road. Yes, Alpine Games manual is 40 pages in color but the size is just about 40% of a standard Lynx manual

Nubian
Hey All, Is the Checkered Flag poster rare? I also agree with the guy who said the Warbirds manual is first-rate. It is in full colour and really adds to the overall enjoyment of the game. I used to love Warbirds but I am a bit annoyed with it now as all you really have to do is turn off your engine and then glide and take shots at the enemy for higher points. Though a good dog-fight is still cool. My favourite posters are the Ishido one and the STUN Runner poster. Regards, Nubian.
dogcorn
Is the Checkered Flag poster rare? Offhand I'd say the "scrap of paper" version is rarer, from my small sample of experience. Between my friend and me we've had at least 3 copies of CF over the years and all have come with the poster, not the paper scrap.

Artlover
Honestly, how many people really read game manuals? http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=1349733 If a game is not self explanatory, then it should atleast be intuitive. Unless it's an instructional simulator, you shouldn't need a freaking manual. I don't!
