technical question

This is also true about other classic systems, I think. Anyway, for some reason, a lot of Atari games have some weird lines and stuff on the left side of the screen. Theres usually a dark area or a bunch of lines that are about 3/4" wide on the left side of the screen. I was just curious why its there and what its for. Im thinking it had something to do with programming for the system. Does anyone have some insight?

but i think your right about it being programmed in because of the way the graphics are handled by the 2600's CPU (6502 or 6507).

if watch that region of the screen when you move objects around you will notice the horizontal line move as you do and vice versa with the vertical.

basicly i think it is an artifact and nothing could be done about it in the early days of gaming but i could be wrong about that.
