Dumb question about Mario Bros.

I love the look of "improved" version of that game. The Mario character is big, bright and moves fairly smoothly. It could pass for a first-round NES game (the Duck Hunt, Golf, Excitebike era)

 

I was never a big fan of Mario games in general, so I guess my question 15 years later is: what's the basic gameplay of the Atari version? And can you not kick the turtles once you get them inverted? I don't understand.

That was the biggest disappointment for me, the lack of the word POW in that box.

 

And yes, Return of Mario Bros. does look far superior. Now if only I could get a cart......

One thing that always disappointed me about the 2600 version was that you could not stand on the top of the POW button. I often used that strategy in the arcade version.

You've got to jump up under the turtles and it makes then invert. Once they are on their backs you can knock them down. That's about it. So, if a turtle gets on the bottom you have nothing to do but avoid it.. Unless you jump up under the "POW" block in the center (Which is just a block in the atari version) then it inverts everything on the screen. Including things that were allready inverted.
