Missile Command - very challenging game!

On an earlier thread, I was looking for help in getting my Missile Command arcade machine back to working status. It has been working again for the past few weeks (thanks again for the tips, Cassidy!) and I've been playing it constantly.

Does anyone else find the arcade version of this game to be EXTREMELY challenging? After hundreds of plays, my best score is still a mere 69,000. I can crack 40,000 regularly, but only rarely can get above that. Most of the other people who have tried my machine can't even break 10,000. The need to constantly defend three missile bases, the speed of the enemy missiles, the damnably-hard-to-hit Smart Bombs all combine to make later waves of this game incredibly hard.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this game! I think the challenge is part of what keeps me coming back again and again to it. I'm just curious if other people find it as addictively difficult as I do. Or if there are other people who, like my girlfriend, find it just too hard to enjoy. :ponder:

Here's a story for you.

I just finished my MAME cabinet and in it's previous life it was a Missile Command. It still has the Missile Command schematics sheet in it.

It was converted one or two times and painted over at least twice.

In it's final life in the public before coming to me it was, of all things, a trivia game called 'Phraze Craze'.

Anyway, as a tribute to the cabinet, once I got it up and running, the first game I played, was Missile Command. Good karma I figure.

I love Missile Command and always have. It's one of my favorites. It is a fast past action filled game that keeps you moving. I love the idea of the three silos. And while I played the game forever on the 2600 and loved it there as well, there is something about the three buttons for each silo that changes the whole strategy of the game.

Great full arcade system to own. Congratulations on getting it up and running. Enjoy it !

I was amazingly good at it.

Here's the trick to high scores: Start the wave with the cursor about 1/3 the way down on the left side. Using the RIGHT missile base, lay out a solid line of 7-8 blasts across the screen. Done cotrrectly, this will destroy up to half your enemies. Remember that the center base fires the fastest shots, so use the left base for easy missiles and save the center for smart bombs and emergencies.

Of course, if all else fails protect the hell out of one city, preferably next to the center base.

  • 4 weeks later...

Very hard game indeed;the most I recall getting is 12,000 or do.Got too watch other people play much better than I could;NovaXpress' tip is exactly what I saw others doing.I got to play a few rounds in a cockpit version of Missile Command;it seemed odd to play this game sitting down though.

New personal high score: 86085. Gives me some hope that I just MIGHT obtain 100,000 some wonderful day. :-)

Spraying definetly has some effectiveness, especially if it is roughly targeted to where the missile actually appear.

For me, my mental mindset is extremely important... I have to realy psyche myself up to be as fast, accurate, and observent as possible. Playing MC without that attitude gives me a mediocre score every time.
