Adding sound effects to Space Invaders

If anyone can give me a push in the right direction, I'm trying to find a way to give each separate type of invader a note. I'm thinking something along the lines of how each brick, when hit, in Breakout makes a different note. I don't want to just post another overdone SI graphic hack, but I don't know if it's such a good idea for an asm newbie like myself to be this ambitious for my first 2600 hack job.

 

For reference, here's a graphic example of what I'm working on.

Most likely, you're going to need to free up some space first. I have heard that SI is pretty tightly packed into that 4k, at least based on a story I read about the original author recounting his experiences with writing the game. If it proves to be really tight, Nukey Shay has made an 8k version of the game with plenty of space for improvements. THough I haven't seen posts from Nukey for a while...
