Unless Activision was running commercials for Freeway a couple of years after it came out (which, of course, is possible), then this could not have happened.

I distinctly remember, when I saw the ads for Freeway, thinking it seemed like a Frogger clone. I know Freeway was coded before Frogger came out; I don't know about the exact timing of its marketing.

Konami developed Frogger and it was released by Sega/Gremlin in 1981. When in that year, I do not know.

Freeway is mentioned in Activision catalog AG-940-05 as being available in Summer 1981 and by the next catalog revision was in release.

I recall seeing Frogger before seeing Freeway, but once again, I am unsure as to the exact release dates of both. Once Frogger for the 2600 came out in 1982, I would suspect people shelved their copies of Freeway and opted for this title.

That would fit with my memory; the thought wasn't "Hey, those other guys are using a frog on the Atari--why is this one a chicken?" It was "Cool--a Frogger-style game on the Atari". So the ads almost certainly predated Parker Brothers' "Frogger" cart though at least some came after the arcade release.

Even though David Crane denies it, Freeway really looks to be inspired by Atari's Space Race from 1973. The gameplay is almost identical. The theme is the main difference.
