8th lutz
For me it is Exed Exes. I played the game on Capcom Classics Collection. This games was in the arcade.
SteveW
I can't think of any specific titles off the top of my head, although I did want to mention CD-ROM based games that try to have a symphonic soundtrack. Iinstead of an orchestra, they use cheesy sounding synthesizers to make it sound like a full orchestra, instead of some geek in a soundbooth with a Casio keyboard. Man, I can't stand the sound of that kind of 'music'. Edited January 31, 2006 by SteveW
ZylonBane
7800 Donkey Kong.
JagFan422
thats easy 1942 for the NES...its just high pitch bleeps, extremely annoying.
+FujiSkunk
One of the games on my "best music" list is also at the very top of my "worst music" list: Ridge Racer. Almost all of the music is excellent, and "Rare Hero" was an instant techno classic. On the other hand, "Rotterdam Nation" still makes me want to shred my eardrums every time I hear it. And Zylon's right, the music in Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior on the 7800 is disposable. Those games need more POKEY!
The_Laird
Some of the music on Jaguar Double Dragon 5 is terrible but then again its also got some pretty good tunes too. S**T game though anyway. Edited January 31, 2006 by mr.kizza
sega saturn x
I find most nes games to be an assualt on the ears. Aside from most nintendo made games the tunes in those old nes games are just terrible. I don't think music in games got really good until the 32 bit era, there were lots of gems though of course before that.
Bruce Tomlin
Anything on the Arcadia 2001. I have always been convinced that whoever did the sound programming for those games was tone-deaf.
Trip_Cannon
The 7800 definitely has a large portion of bad music. I'd say the intro music for Planet Smashers 7800 is the worst though.
shadow460
Yeah, but Arcadia 2001 music makes 7800 music sound like a concert. That goes double for the "warp" sound made in so many of Emerson's games.
Zoop
rygar for nes. i thought the music was dreadful in killed my ears to play the game. the music didnt even fit the game.
Jess Ragan
Hydlide ranks up there (and I do mean "ranks") as having one of the worst soundtracks in a video game. It sounds like a musical geeting card that Indiana Jones would give his cantankerous dad on Father's Day. JR

Tempest
Anything on the Arcadia 2001. I have always been convinced that whoever did the sound programming for those games was tone-deaf. 1010315 There was music on the Arcadia? I always thought that was my sound chip melting... Seriously though, there are some 'tunes' on the arcadia that are actually painful to listen to (I mean physically painful). The elevator scene in Turtles comes to mind (especially when it cracks that top note). Tempest
SteveW
rygar for nes. i thought the music was dreadful in killed my ears to play the game. the music didnt even fit the game. 1010590 Really? Because I've always loved the music from Rygar. It's one of my favorite in-game music pieces from the NES era.

jaybird3rd
I'll join those who have cited 7800 Donkey Kong. Before listening to that "music" and those sound effects, I never thought I would hear something that would make me want to gouge my own eardrums out with pencils, but I came pretty close. Then I fired up 7800 BallBlazer and recovered instantly.

Also, to quote someone that said that game music didn't get good until the 32 bit era. the 16-bit era had some great tunes, Sonic 1 had great tunes, but especially the RPGs on the SNES, FFVI or III in the US, had some of the best music i've heard in a game. +FujiSkunk
Anybody who thinks game music didn't get good until the 32-bit era, or even the 16-bit era, never had a Commodore 64.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart commands it! JR

8th lutz
Some the tunes from the megaman nes games weren't bad. So, it is up to what you expect in game music for 8 bit music. Edited February 2, 2006 by 8th lutz
