My 6TB drive arrived! When I took it out of the box it was heavier than I expected. Per Amazon the 6TB is 1.9 pounds while the 4TB is 1.6.

My storage only increased from 5.37 TB to 8.15 TB. That's because the 6TB is so much larger than the other drives that the Reserved for Expansion increased by almost 3TB.

Addendum: Capacity Calculator results showing why I bought the larger drive now:

five 3TB drives = 8.17 TB of storage

four 3TB drives + one 4TB drive = 8.17 TB of storage, 0.9 TB reserved for future

three 3TB drives + two 4TB drives = still 8.17 TB of storage, 1.81 TB reserved for future

two 3TB drives + three 4TB drives = 9.07 TB of storage

Hmm... I wonder if you would have gotten the same capacity increase with just a 3TB drive. And since you've filled all of the slots, next time you'll need to replace one of the existing 3TB drives and won't get as much of a boost (maybe 1 TB as it finally uses the part of the 4TB reserved for expansion).

I did some experiements before with the Capacity Calculator which basically informed me it was better to buy a single larger drive now, else have buy multiple drives at the same time later to get an increase in capacity.

I've added some screen shots to the end of the blog entry that show if I'd filled the Drobo with five 3TB drives, I'd have to replace three of them before I would get additional storage.
