What time is it? BURGERTIME!

blog-0273900001412000540.jpgAh, Burgertime...just looking at the side of this arcade machine can transport me back in time decades. Great game that appeared on just about every platform as well. This is one I would not have attempted normally, but my buddy IntellivisionDude mentioned he would like a Burgertime related sign for his gameroom to accompany his INTV Brotherhood sign.

Heres a little secret about me, I can't turn down a request...it might not get done right away but when I know someone likes my stuff enough to make a custom request I just can't resist, I always try, and I try hard. I have forgone sleep and passed on meals when I get a project on my mind that I can't let go, not sure if thats good or bad, but it's the truth, lol

The reason I normally would have passed on this idea is the burgertime chef "pepper" is multicolored and has lots of small "pixels" that usually do not transfer well to aluminum composite. Sure, drawing squares in cad is easy but if I just made a silhouette of Pepper you could hardly even tell what it was, the colors are needed, and I do not paint so....time to stack!

Just like you stack the hamburgers in Burgertime I stacked the Aluminum to build Chef Pepper. It's around 10 machined pieces all together. I started with a full silhouette piece made in red. This allowed me to cut holes in the white coat/hat pieces and have the needed red areas show through. Now I was faced with a challenge, the face piece. I already used white and I do not have any colors that remotely match the Bugertime yellow "skin" color. I pondered an African American Chef Pepper....but turns out the brown Bronze I thought I had was already gone, so to make up for not having any "proper" colors I went with something very special. High Polished aluminum Mirror. Yes, the face is an actual mirror you can see your reflection in.

I had the advantage of seeing the location this was going to go before I made it. It is too be located in a symetrical way on top of a pair of speakers, one having the INTV Brotherhood sign and one having this Burgertime sign.

So, because of that I made the sign the same size as the Brotherhood crest, also, because they are complimenting an Intellivision shelf I added an "INTV" logo to the top. Since I went with woodgrain (thought it would look nice with the wood shelves he has underneath) on the crest piece I put a nice piece of Green felt in the back of the INTV logo to make it "pop" out a bit. Wood is meant as kind of a background in this design so I wanted to do something to make the INTV logo stand out :) I really wanted to add another crest border piece to the back of the wood crest (so about 1/2" mirror border would have shown around it) but the sign was getting a bit thick as it was and then this sign would have been 1/2" bigger than the Brotherhood sign and we can't have that now, it will not be symmetrical, lol. So, I made some simple pixel style mirror pieces to go on the sides and give it a little fuller look :)

In closing, a quick little burgertime fact you may not have known. I went with the classic "H" on the hat. All artwork shows a "P" on the hat but the (in game) graphics show "H" because the original name of the game was supposed to be "HAMBURGER"

Honestly, between you and me I like the H better because it is more symetrical, lol....but I think forum member pimpmaul put it best when he said...

i prefer the in game h as you made an in game mr pepper

This project was very fun and even though the odds were against me I never felt stressed or annoyed :)
