blog-0866197001424411487.jpgWell, let's face it, Bubsy Bobcat is based off a fairly generic designed of a animorphic cat that walks on two legs, wears a shirt with no pants, and all that. So naturally there will be similarities with other cartoon characters right?

Soooo.... with that out of the way, I FOUND BUBSY REBORN!! :D

Yeh, I was doing a search for "Japan Bubsy" and this picture showed up...

And I was all "HOLY COWBOOGERS!! Bubsy in a Mario outfit!!"

Well apparently someone else thought the same thing if the search pegged this picture as Bubsy. And while this is a brilliant picture of what looks like Bubsy in a Mario costume (and I will still say it is), it actually is not.

Take Bubsy, give him a varied waredrobe, make him a bit more hip and a longer tail and you get NECKY THE FOX

Yep, Necky looks all chill here, just hanging out, seems easy going. Amazing how the cat mascot goes from EXTREME!!!!111!!!!11! in the 1990's to just hanging out one of the guys in the 2010's.

So once I found this Bubsy looking character's name I found the wiki entry on this character, who apparently is featured in three games, though I am not sure if he is the main character. The entry reads....

Necky the Fox

Famitsū magazine covers alternately feature pop idols or actresses on even-numbered issues and the Famitsū mascot, Necky (ネッキー Nekkī?) the Fox[5] in odd-numbered issues.[6] Year-end and special editions all feature Necky dressed as popular contemporary video game characters. Necky is the cartoon creation of artist, Susumu Matsushita, and he takes the form of a costumed fox.[7] The costumes worn by Necky reflect current popular video games. Necky's name was chosen according to a reader poll, and it derives from a complex Japanese pun: "Necky" is actually the reverse of the Japanese word for fox, kitsune (キツネ?), and his original connection to Famicom Tsūshin is intended to evoke the bark of the fox, the Japanese onomatopoeia of which is "kon kon" (コンコン?).[8]

Well very good. Yeh yeh, I know this character is not Bubsy any more than Chester Cheetah, or the Cinemark Movie cat. But whenever I see anything remotely similar to Bubsy I have to laugh a bit. Did they inspire Bubsy, did Bubsy inspire them? Or is there just a fun cat running through the minds of artists everywhere and if so are we looking at essentially one spiritual cat made manifest from time to time in these various mascots?

Hehe... oh well. Looks like a Bubsy, walks like a Bubsy, so more Bubsy-like material and inspiration for Bubsy fan art. Yah!!
