ActionMaxs are hot.

I had an idea to get out my ActionMax and test it just to see if it still works. It had been in a hot garage for most of the summer. The first find was the gun, atop some PS1 games in a box. So I dug under the box. There was the ActionMax console. So I just took the whole box in and realized the sensor wasn't in there.

So I went back into the garage, and looked for it. The first thing I did was look in the controllers, etc. bin. Luckily for me, it was in there. So I got the sensor back in the house. I went and got some C batteries for the game, when I noticed there were 2 C batteries sitting on the table. So I used those instead. I had put two batteries already in the thing, just in case it would decide to corrode on me. So I put took out two batteries when I was done with it so that wouldn't happen. I put them back in.

The next step was to get a tape. I had all my ActionMax games. I chose Sonic Fury since that is the most common ActionMax game. It was rewound to the beginning. I pressed play. It was already at the enemy testing part. I shot the flashing enemy light. It works!

I then plugged in the DVD player so I could test Snowman's Land. I figured it would work since Bubba's Buck Blastin' did. I shot at a snowman. Hit detected. It works as well. So I'm happy. But I am still wondering about an idea for a third homebrew game. Should I even make one? Not many people asked for Snowman's Land, so it's either the system's popularity is declining, or they're breaking more often. The machine is 30 years old. I just now remembered I was going to play it in May for its 30th anniversary. I totally forgot!

Oh well. I will keep the Actionmax out. I'll play Blue Thunder for its 30th anniversary next month, and then Pops Ghostly in October (I love Halloween!) But man, I wish there were more games for it. 7 does not seem like enough. But I'm guessing Worlds of Wonder were low on ideas as well, otherwise the company might not have hastily ditched the machine.

Decline in popularity? Nah, I can't imagine the ActionMax would suffer much of a decline from what I presume are rather low figures to begin with. :-P

I don't think I have heard of ActionMax before. My sister had something similar, but it played a mystery game of some sort and didn't use a sensor.

So you have done homebrew for this thing? Do you have video somewhere? That's really cool!

The ActionMax uses video as the graphics. You shoot at the blinking target with the gun connected to the ActionMax. The console keeps score with a two-digit LCD display and blinks the sensor light on if you hit the target, and says "Target Hit." I've posted screenshots of the games I've made in the ActionMax homebrew thread in the homebrew section of the forums. Snowman's Land pics are on page 3 I think.
