Playing Fist II (C64)

Hi there!

So, now that my wife and me have beaten Pokemon Snap on the VC, I can go on here...

As usual plans have changed, so instead of Paperboy, here comes Fist II:

Why no Paperboy? Well, I really tried getting into it, but no matter which version I tried (NES/SMS/GEN), I couldn't force myself into playing it, no matter how much I was trying. The best one seemed to be the Genesis one, but it still sucked.

Next in line was "Fist II - The Legend Continues", so the full title, which is the sequel to "Way of the Exploding Fist", which is almost a carbon copy of Archer McLeans "International Karate". (Anyone knowing the full story here, please fill me in. Who stole whose idea?)

The gameplay can easily be described as "International Karate Adventure". You're running around in a multi screen scenery, collecting scrolls (=> Read: Skills). These need to be activated in temples. To spice up this quest with some action, every few screens you're interupted with an IK style battle.

That's it basically. The map is extremely huge and complicated. There's 8 scrolls and 8 temples. The longplay walkthrough video for the game is running some impressive 80 minutes. (Get it from C64 Longplays.)

I'm using a map of course and safestates, so today I managed to find and activate the first three scrolls already.

The game itself has been an okay experience so far, with maybe a bit too much wandering around for my taste, but at least the enemies are not respawning. What I didn't like at all so far though, is the bugs in the game. It was crashing the emulation in VICE for two times already and if it's gonna happen just _once_ again I'll quit playing for sure!!! :x

Greetings,

Manuel

Have you played this version yet:

Yup, this one precisely. I always try a Remember, Nostalgia or Hokotu Force crack before anything else, even before dumps of originals :)

In the Remember scrolltext it says that this version was already improved over a first release which was even worse, but they couldn't fix any more of the bugs that were still in it due to RAM shortage. A bit of a lame excuse IMO, but I think you can't expect from a cracker to fully reverse-engineer and fix a game that is bugged like that.

The Way of the Exploding Fist was released before International Karate, btw. (both Karate Champ influenced, of course)

Significantly before it, so that International Karate could be considered a cloning effort, or was it just 2-3 months, so it was supposedly more of a redundancy accident?

EDIT: Just had a look in the Zzap64 archives. Exploding Fist was reviewed a full 10 months earlier.

Since I got a Mail asking where the "Fist 2" longplay video can be found, I added this info to the entry above ;)

BTW: The "Playing..." article series will continue with a new batch in February.
