Playing Ninja (C64)

Hi there!

Wow, that was a short one!!

I assume that writing this entry will take longer than it took beating this game, hehe :)

Ninja is basically a low budget version of Fist II. Funny enough that it was released the same month. Still, it did pretty good actually. It has less screens than the original, but that also meant a lot less wandering through empty screens.

The mission is simpler, you just have to collect 7 "idols". The battles are also easier, so I managed to beat it in ~30 minutes.

It actually is an A8 original I think, that was just ported to the C64. I considered playing the A8 version, but for one didn't the colors look good in the screenshots I saw and then didn't I get it to run within the 5 minutes I tried, so I didn't bother. The C64 version has music from Rob Hubbard, which was another plus.

Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another brawler in the form of "Renegade", but first it will continue with another horz. scrolling shoot'em up.

Greetings,

Manuel

I love this game - played it for hours on the A8. Something I liked is that the enemies could really wail on you if they got a chance, so you had to be careful especially when facing groups. The short play-time is fine since I felt each screen was nicely detailed and very action-packed.

Thanks for commenting on the A8 version, it's good to hear that it's also fun.

Hm... according to atarimania is the A8 music also from Rob Hubbard. But in the ASMA archive is the tune just sorted into games/classic...

Regarding the next "Playing..." article, I just had to cancel the article regarding "Sanxion". Unfortunately it has a bonus round with a very fast moving color pattern, that is causing motion sickness when I play it :)

A meta question I have regarding the series: Do you want me to post a list of ~5 possible upcoming titles for each block of it, or do you prefer being surprised? ;)

Well, I would prefer a surprise (more meat and less planning in the blog, if that makes sense) - but I would be most interested in your '2600 essentials' and why you chose them as an upcoming entry.

Making them surprise articles probably also means I don't have to explain changing plans too often :)

I'll see if I can write some meaningful text regarding my essential choices. I've been thinking about it, but I find it pretty hard to describe for example why exactly I think that H.E.R.O. is such a great game. So perfect design combined with perfect execution, it's almost "magic" ;)

Maybe compare each game to it's "cousins" and say why it is better?
